Chapter 8: The Enemy Behind The Smile Elara Vaughn knew one thing better than anyone. The closer you got to your enemies, the easier it became to destroy them. That was why she didn’t rush. Revenge was not about anger. It was about patience. And patience was something she had learned the hard way. --- “Are you avoiding me?” Adrian Cross’s voice came from behind her. Elara stopped walking. She had expected this. After their last conversation, she knew Adrian would not simply disappear. The old Elara had always chased after him. The new Elara made him chase her. She turned slowly. “Why would you think that?” Adrian stared at her. Because she was no longer the same. Because every time he looked at her, he felt like he was losing control. “You used to tell me everything.” A quiet laugh escaped her. “Did I?” “Yes.” His expression softened. “We were close.” Elara looked at him. That word. Close. It almost sounded like a joke. “Yes, Adrian.” Her voice was calm. “We were.” The past tense bothered him. “You’re acting like I did something wrong.” For a second, Elara’s eyes turned cold. Only for a second. But Adrian saw it. And it confused him. Because there was no reason for her to look at him like she hated him. Not yet. “I have work to do.” She walked away. Leaving Adrian standing there with more questions than answers. --- That evening, Elara attended a business dinner with the Vaughn family. Her father sat beside her, discussing future plans. “You handled yourself well with Sebastian Hale.” Elara looked at him. “You noticed?” Richard smiled slightly. “I’m your father. Of course I noticed.” For a moment, Elara felt a warmth she had forgotten. In her previous life, she had spent too much time chasing people who never valued her. She had ignored those who always did. “I’m trying to become better.” Richard nodded. “You already are.” Those simple words stayed with her. Because this time… She would not lose her family. --- Meanwhile, inside Hale Corporation, Sebastian Hale stared at a document on his desk. A report about Elara Vaughn. Her achievements. Her history. Her relationships. Everything looked normal. Too normal. His fingers tapped against the desk. There was a contradiction. The woman described in the reports was kind and trusting. But the woman he met was careful and unreadable. Something had happened. Something that changed her. “Sebastian.” Vivian Moore’s voice interrupted him. He looked up. She walked into the office confidently. “I heard you’re working closely with Elara Vaughn.” Sebastian’s expression remained neutral. “It’s business.” Vivian smiled. “Of course.” But her eyes said something else. She was not asking. She was checking. “You know people are talking.” “People always talk.” Vivian stepped closer. “She’s not someone you know well.” Sebastian looked at her. “And neither are most people.” The answer surprised her. Because Sebastian was defending Elara. Even slightly. Vivian forced a smile. “I’m only looking out for you.” Sebastian said nothing. And that silence was enough. --- Later that night, Elara received a message. Not from Adrian. Not from Sebastian. From an unknown number. You should be careful. Not everyone around you is your friend. Her eyes narrowed. A warning? Or a threat? She looked at the message again. Then smiled. Because whoever sent it had made one mistake. They reminded her of something. She was no longer the person who could be frightened. She was the person they should fear. --- Across the city, a woman stood in the darkness, looking at Elara’s picture. Her expression was calm. Almost gentle. But her eyes were cold. “Elara Vaughn…” A soft smile appeared. “You really did come back different.” The mastermind had finally noticed. The game had begun.
