Chapter 2: The Woman Who Returned
The first thing Elara Vaughn did after waking up was check the date.
Not because she doubted what had happened.
She knew.
She could still feel the burning pain in her throat.
She could still hear Adrian Cross’s voice.
She could still see the smile on her best friend’s face as she watched Elara die.
Those memories were carved into her soul.
Her eyes moved to the calendar sitting on the desk.
Three years earlier.
Exactly three years before the night everything was taken from her.
A slow breath left her lips.
She was back.
Not as the woman who begged for love.
Not as the woman who trusted the wrong people.
Not as the woman who allowed everyone around her to decide her fate.
That Elara Vaughn was dead.
The woman standing in her place now knew better.
Her phone buzzed.
The familiar name appeared on the screen.
Adrian Cross.
For a moment, silence filled the room.
In her previous life, seeing his name had made her smile.
She had waited for his calls.
She had believed his promises.
She had imagined a future with him.
Now?
Her expression remained completely emotionless.
The man who had once held her heart was the same man who had handed her death.
Interesting.
She wondered how long he had been pretending.
Slowly, she answered.
“Hello.”
His voice came through, warm and familiar.
“Elara? You sound different.”
A small smile appeared on her lips.
Of course he noticed.
Adrian Cross had known the old Elara.
The naive Elara.
The woman who would forgive him no matter what he did.
“I just woke up,” she replied.
A simple answer.
A careful answer.
On the other end, Adrian laughed softly.
“Are you free today? I wanted to see you.”
Three years ago, she would have immediately agreed.
Three years ago, she would have smiled for hours after hearing those words.
Now she only felt cold.
“I’m busy.”
A pause.
Adrian seemed surprised.
“You’re busy?”
“Yes.”
Her voice was calm.
“And Adrian?”
“Hmm?”
“Don’t assume you know me.”
Silence.
Before he could respond, she ended the call.
Elara stared at her phone.
The first move had been made.
Small.
But necessary.
She walked toward the mirror.
The reflection staring back at her was younger than the woman who died.
But the eyes were different.
The old Elara searched for love.
This Elara searched for justice.
A knock sounded at her door.
“Elara?”
Her body went still.
That voice.
Her best friend.
The person who had smiled while destroying her life.
The door opened, revealing the woman she once trusted more than anyone.
“Good morning,” she said brightly.
A perfect smile.
A perfect mask.
Elara looked at her.
And for the first time, she understood something.
The most dangerous enemies were not always the ones who hated you.
Sometimes…
They were the ones who loved you enough to stand close while holding a knife.
“Good morning,” Elara replied.
Her smile was gentle.
Almost convincing.
Because revenge required patience.
And this time…
She would not strike blindly.
She would destroy them carefully.
Piece by piece.
---
Across the city, inside the towering headquarters of Hale Corporation, Sebastian Hale sat behind his desk.
The room was silent.
Everyone knew better than to disturb him.
Cold.
Powerful.
Unreachable.
Those were the words people used to describe him.
His assistant placed a file on the table.
“Mr. Hale, this is the information you requested.”
Sebastian opened it.
His eyes scanned the documents quickly.
Then he paused.
For a reason he could not explain, one name caught his attention.
Elara Vaughn.
Something about her felt familiar.
Not her name.
Something else.
A feeling.
A warning.
Sebastian closed the file.
“Interesting.”
And for the first time in a long while…
He found himself curious about someone.
