The Pelican Inn was a throwback, a long throwback, to a different era.
It was two stories and had thirty apartments in an "L" shape that wrapped around a pool and a cabana. The Pelican took up a city block in the suburb called Lauderdale by the Sea and was the winter getaway for Canadians and snowbirds who migrated to Florida every winter to escape the misery of a northern winter.
The Pelican Inn had existed since before Lauderdale by the Sea had an official name, and for many years stood alone in this neighborhood. Now it was surrounded by enormous pink, green, and white sky-scraping condos which loomed over the little Pelican from all sides.
