Ann's pulse pounded when she heard Ray's frantic request. She was the total antithesis of the opulent setting and stuffy mood, sitting across from him in their opulent living room. With a strained and passionate voice, Ray said, "Ann, darling, I know this is... unconventional." Nothing appeared to be working, no matter how hard we tried. I can no longer bear your sorrow." Ann's hands trembled in her lap as tears flooded her eyes. She had known for a while that their attempts at conception had been unsuccessful, but she never would have thought that Ray would support using such extreme measures. "You want me to... sleep with Dickson?" Barely anybody could hear her mutter. Ray nodded and kept his eyes fixed. Dickson and I had been friends for a very long time, Ann. I have total faith in him since he is a decent man. This appears to be the solution we have been looking for. Ann was in complete shock. How could Ray ever entertain the possibility? She was confused and afraid by the idea of being near to another man, especially one as close as Dickson. With a faltering voice, she said, "But... what about us, Ray?" "What about our marriage?" Ray extended his arm and grasped her hands firmly yet softly. Ann and I have a solid relationship. bigger than any challenge we might encounter. This has an impact on both of us and our shared future. Please believe what I say. His eyes revealed the depths of resolve and agony that Ann could perceive. She was confident that Ray would go to any lengths to provide her with the family they both so much desired. But the fear of breaking their promise loomed large over them like a heavy fog. After a while, she said, "I... I need time to think," getting up from her chair and moving her hands off her lap. Ray watched her approach the window, her silhouette defined by the last of the evening sun, with a mixture of thrill and horror. He spoke softly, "Ann, please think about it. For us. In their opulent mansion, Ann remained motionless, Ray's proposal pressing down on her like a leaden shroud. She realized that her choice would have a lasting impact on their lives, therefore she couldn't help but wonder if their love could weather the approaching storm. She muttered into the quiet, "What have we become, Ray? with a heavy heart. What assistance do you need from me?" Just as the last of the daylight dipped beyond the horizon, Ann was faced with a difficult decision. Her emotions were conflicted between longing and devotion, love and betrayal. The weight of Ray's proposal reflects Ann's conflicting feelings of loyalty to her husband and intense sense of betrayal at the idea of having a strong relationship with someone else. She is forced to consider the unsettling issue, "Can their marriage survive such a shocking and unthinkable proposition?" as night descends all around her. Ann gazed by the window, her thoughts a tornado of feelings. She was lost in her thoughts for a long while and didn't notice the cool night breeze brushing against her skin. She could find little comfort in the enormous cityscape below her, with its lights blazing, for the very difficult choice she now had to make. How had they got to where they were? How could the happy union they had have been so dismal? She was plagued by the recollection of their innumerable appointments to physicians and specialists, all of which resulted in disappointment. With every missed opportunity, Ray's frustration had grown, and she had personally witnessed how similar her own need was to his. And now, looming above them like a dense mist, his proposal threatened to overshadow their previous love. Ann felt like she was standing on a cliff and didn't know which way to fall because of her intense sense of betrayal at the possibility of having a close relationship with another man and her loyalty to Ray. She was filled with visions of Dickson, his easy laugh and smile tainted by the forbidden passion bubbling beneath the surface. She felt terrible about pushing him too far, even though she had always respected and even adored him. Even so, as she stood there alone in their opulent home, a persistent anxiety tore at her conscience: what if Ray was right? What if this was their one and only opportunity to start a family and be happy? She was shocked out of her thoughts by a quiet knock on the door. She turned to see Ray waiting anxiously but optimistically in the doorway. A gentle "Ann," as delicate as a thread, shattered the silence. "Have you... have you made a decision?" Ann took a long breath, the evening light creeping up her throat. In a split second, how could she possible decide what would happen to their marriage? She could not reconcile her affection for Ray with her fear of betraying him. Her heart was thumping loudly enough to be heard above the words, "I... I need more time, Ray," she mumbled. Ray gave a pitying nod, but his shoulders lowered in submission. Naturally, my dear. As much time as it requires, give it. Please remember that I'll always be here for you, regardless of what you decide." Ray turned and left her alone again, the weight of his proposition pushing hard on her shoulders and his words hanging between them like a silent pledge. Ann is riven by her love for her husband and her intense grief at the idea of betraying him as she considers the scope of Ray's request. The pressure builds with each passing second until she is almost crushed under its weight. With her emotions divided between duty and desire, loyalty and love, Ann is forced to consider the terrible decision she must now make as dusk falls on the city outside.
