Ann seemed to hear Ray whisper something, and then there was a heavy mist in the room that made it difficult for her to speak. She looked at him in disbelief, her heart pounding.

She mumbled, "Ray, I really can't," in a dejected and hopeless tone.

Ray looked at her misanthropically for a minute. "Please, Ann. You are aware of my feelings in this regard. For what duration do we expect this to persist? Stutter as she attempts to express her terror.
