The Reckoning
The air was thin, and my heart banged against my lungs like a furious drum. The figure reappeared from the shadows, their weapon glinting strangely under the streetlamp's light. I instinctively moved closer to Ethan, who stood protectively in front of me.
"Don't move!" the figure screamed, their tone frigid and piercing. "I'm not done with you yet!"
The police officers jumped into action, reaching for their holsters, but the figure waved the weapon, eliminating any possibility of negotiation. "Do you think I'm afraid of your badges?" "You're all just obstacles in my path."
"Put the gun down!" one of the officers ordered, his voice forceful but filled with anxiety. "You are encircled. "You have no way out."
"Surrounded?" the creature asked, laughing harshly and bitterly, sending chills down my spine. "Do you honestly think I care about that? "I am bigger than any of you can imagine."
Ethan's jaw tightened, and he looked at me, his eyes full with determination. "Stay behind me, Liry," he murmured quietly. "No matter what happens, don't move."
“But—” I started, but he cut me off with a look, angry and protective. The atmosphere felt thick with danger, a physical tension that had fallen over us like a storm cloud.
The figure’s gaze darted around, assessing the officers’ positions. “You think I’ll just stand here and wait for you to arrest me?” they joked. “I’m not leaving without what I came for.”
“What do you want?” I shouted, my voice breaking through the chaos. “What is this really about?”
The figure’s eyes locked onto mine, and for a short moment, There was a flash of weakness there, “You think you’re innocent in all of this? You’re just as much a part of it as he is,” they spat, pointing the gun at Ethan. “This isn’t just about revenge—it’s about exposing the truth.” “What truth?” I replied, hopelessly. “What do you know?”
But the figure only smiled, shaking their head. “You really have no idea. But you will. Soon enough.”
Suddenly, without notice, the person spun around and bolted down the alleyway. “Stop!” a cop screamed, taking off after them.
Chaos happened. The other officers rushed into action, shouting orders, while I stood frozen, fear gripping me. My eyes darted between Ethan and the cops as I fought to process what had just happened. This was not just an attack; it was a message, a warning wrapped in a threat.
“Ethan, what’s going on?” I demanded, my voice shaking. “What did they mean about the truth?”
“I can’t explain everything right now Liry,” “We need to get out of here first. It’s not safe.”
“Not safe?” I repeated, incredulous. “This isn’t safe! What’s going on with your family? With my father?”
But before he could reply, the sound of footsteps pounding against sidewalk echoed from behind us. A second figure emerged, equally dark and powerful. They seemed to slide through the darkness, moving with purpose.
“Get down!” Ethan shouted, pushing me to the ground just as the new figures raised a weapon of their own, pointing it at the fleeing figure.
I hit the ground hard, my heart racing as I glanced up, fear rushing through me. The officers were still chasing the first figure, leaving us briefly unguarded.
“Ethan!” I cried, but he was already on his feet, moving quickly to make a barrier between me and the new threat.
“Who are you?” he yelled at the man, his voice steady but laced with tension. “What do you want?”
The new thug laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down my spine. “You really don’t understand, do you? It’s not just about your little love story anymore. It’s about everything your family has hidden—everything they’ve destroyed.”
I struggled to hold my feet, fear rising in my chest. “What do you mean? What have they destroyed?”
“Your family is built on lies, and the truth is coming out,” the thug's said, a look of madness in their eyes. “And you’re right in the middle of it, sweetheart.”
Ethan stepped closer, his face was mean. “You need to leave her out of this. Whatever this is, it’s not her fault.”
“Oh, but it is,” the figure replied back harshly, their voice thick and loud “She’s the key to everything. She’ll pay for the sins of her family—whether she knows about it or not.”
Before I could reply, sirens blared in the distance, coming close to us. The thug’s eyes widened, calculating their next move. “This isn’t over,” they hissed, and in one swift move, they turned to flee, disappearing into the tunnel down the bridge.
“Stop!” I yelled, but they were already gone.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asked, turning to me. “Did they hurt you?”
“I’m fine, but what just happened?” I asked, trying to catch my breath. “What do they mean I’m the key?”
“I’ll explain everything,” he promised, but just then, my father’s voice broke through the chaos as he approached, his face a mix of relief and anger.
“Liry! What were you thinking?” he shouted, looking between Ethan and me. “You can’t just run into danger like that!”
“Dad, it’s not what you think!” I complained, my heart racing fast. “This isn’t just about me! Something is going on—something you’ve kept from me all this while Dad tell me what's going on!”
He opened his mouth to reply, but just then, a sudden commotion erupted from behind us. Officers were screaming, and I turned to see two of them wrestling with the first thug who had reappeared, but he wasn’t alone.
More thugs came out from the shadow, surrounding the officers. My blood was cold as I realized we were outnumbered by the thugs.
“What the hell is going on?” Ethan ordered, his eyes looking around for an escape. “We need to get out of here—now!”
But before we could proceed, I felt a slight pain in my arm, I stared down, terrified, as blood seeped through my fingertips. "Ethan!" I cried, yelled gripping my throat. "I'm hurt!"
"Stay with me, Liry!" he exclaimed, racing to my side. The world began to turn around in front of my eyes, with darkness seeping in at the corners.
"Call for help!" my father yelled at the officers, but the intensity in his words was obscured by the ringing in my ears.
As the scenario unfolded around me—chaos, shouting, and the clatter of footsteps—the last thing I saw before the blackness descended was Ethan's panicked face, terror etched into every feature. Hold on, Liry! Stick with me!"
Then everything became black.
At that point, I realised the threat was far from over. As I slid into slumber, one disturbing question persisted in my mind: Would I awaken in time to find the truth?
