Calum came forward and greeted Toby’s Mom. “Hey, Mrs. Smith.” He flashed her a friendly smile which she returned with barely hidden distaste. “Hi, Calum.”
She turned her attention back to her son. “Toby, are you sure you’re going to be okay?” She asked with a concerned frown.
He walked closer to her, taking his overnight bag from her and replied in a low voice, embarrassed at how she was acting and hoping the others didn't hear him. “Mom, stop it. I’m fine.”
She whispered back. “I don’t know if this is a good idea. You heard what happened the other day, we don’t know if he’s stable right now.”
“Mom, seriously. He’s my friend.” Toby tried to keep his voice down, but he was getting annoyed with his Mother and it came out loud enough so everyone could hear despite his efforts to whisper.
