" Seriously?" I tilted my head at him. " She's mine!" I say, mimicking his deep voice. " Will it kill you if you're not such an ass?"
He massages the ankle in silence. Fully concentrated, like it was a whole job on its own. " Are you even listening to me?"
" To a child throwing tantrums? Yes. The whole of the confederation is listening to you yapping. If you don't mind, I want to concentrate."
Something irked him. It wasn't me. But I can't tell, so I keep quiet. He grunts in frustration after a long while. A familiar voice cuts in from behind. I can't tell how long he has been there.
Strutting in, David stooped and gently touched his shoulder." It's alright brother. I've sent for one of the healers...you need to get some rest."
He snaps his head at him, and within a twinkle, David retracted his hand.
I glanced at them, bewildered. They're supposed to be brothers. What's this frightening aura radiating from their interactions?
His eyes wanders to my ankle again, visibly twitching with disappointment. I withdraw my leg and he got up to leave.
I sit up, expecting him to be gone in a little while, but his coat fights for my attention like an unwanted suitor.
" Go already!" I screamed in my mind.
He grunted. It feels like he heard me. That can't be possible, right?
He's a werewhatever. Not some mind reader.
" By the way, I should inform you. We are still legally married," his voice split the silence, stretching the elasticity of my patience.
"Whatever you are nursing in that small mind of yours. It's in your best interest to erase it."
" I hate you," I mouthed, but something stirred inside me. Like a little flame shooting out from the hearth.
" Join the queue. You're not alone,"He said, and disappeared from sight.
" What an ass!" I humphed. Breaking off from the trails of his departure, my attention reverted to his clone. He doesn't appear to be leaving.
" I want to apologize for what Bella did earlier. She mistook you for someone different."
Somehow, my mind drifted away from my company. Nothing he said imprinted on my mind.
I kept my eyes on the path Damian had taken. His hands... it's the first time he's touched me. I run my hands over the spot. It feels like he took the pain with him.
" Don't take it to heart," Damon interrupted my drift. " My brother is one of the legendary healers this realm has ever known. But he's lost the touch because of the curse.
" Damian is cursed?" I shot up from the bed, heart nearly out of my skin.
" Is this some kind of joke? He's cursed?"
He nodded in the affirmative.
Goodness. As a human, he was crippled for years. As a werewolf, he's cursed. The fates must hate him so much to treat him this way.
" What does this curse really do?"
He chuckled.
" What?"
" Nothing. I'm just wondering how you both got married," he spoke, his gaze sweeping over me with a switching glow in his eyes. I can't explain the feeling, but it's damn good holding a man's attention like this. Especially, a stunningly handsome one.
" Oh!" My lips parted, and pursed again, brooding. " I never imagined that he had brothers. You both don't show up for parties or gatherings. And there's no picture in his home that has you and the other one in it."
He chuckled again, and arched his brows. " It really seems like you and Damon have an existing history you need to remember."
I snorted, and exhaled. " That's irrelevant right now."
He tapped my ankle gently. I withdrew, feeling a trail of the same feeling from Damian's touch
His eyes flicked. He apologized.
" The healers will be with you in a little while. Get some rest for now."
I nodded, and grabbed the sheets once he was out of sight. I hurried down and shut the door, chains safely latched.
" What was that?"I reminisced of all the time I came a little close to contact with Damian. I haven't experienced this. It feels like it's something that comes with werewolves.
Nearly hours later, I was still waiting for the healers, palms supporting my chin.
Someone knocks, and I dragged my leg to open up. To my dismay, it's the two halfwit witches.
" What do you both want with me? David explained that you mistook me for someone else. If you're here to apologize, please, no need."
They both laughed. And stepped aside. At first, I thought it was an invitation to approach them. Was I wrong?!
It's a lady. Tender looking, with sharp defined features. " She looks too perfect to be unmarried,"I thought, eyes lingering over her full bust as she drew closer.
" Hello. I heard you were here," she said with a note of familiarity.
" Have we met?"
She pouted, offended. " That's unfair. I have been your husband's secretary for years and you don't even recognize me?"
" Oh! You must be D!"
" Hang on. She's one of them as well," I thought, exhausted. At this point, I would be the least surprised if my sister turns out to be a werewolf.
I limped away from the door, letting her in. She follows me back to the bed. It took awhile before I realized we still had company. I looked at them. My forehead furrowed.
" I think they both started off on the wrong foot with you. I apologize on their behalf," D said , beaming at me.
She looks too adorable to ignore.
"Let me make it all better."
" You don't have to," I shook my head mechanically, but she insisted. " They're my sisters. I should make up for their impudence," she noted and clapped. Some girls walked in, carrying platters of assorted dishes. The aroma is mouth watering enough to intensify my hunger.
" Funky," I rubbed my palms, ready to dip into the dishes.
I cut out a steak and brought it to my lips. The intensity of their gaze makes me stop. " Aren't you all going to join me?” I questioned.
