Chapter 19

~Kingston's POV~ The entire five-hour drive back home, my chest ached. Whatever this was, it was making me sick, tearing through my body. I was powerless, weak. I felt empty as I drove in silence back home. This ache, this desire broke way to something I had suppressed for so long: anger and rage. She is mine. I have a deep history of violence, of vengence. Something I locked away. Something I strive to control every day. A beast I promised myself and loved ones to never unleash again. It's the whole reason I joined Full Howl, to keep the beast at bay, to give up my powers, to subdue my beast. But how could I stand by while Ashleigh was in Troy's clutches? I had gotten home and called April and Mae asking for their help. They were on their way over. I was pacing, I felt like I abandoned her. Left her to die. What was I supposed to do? Take her. It was so hard to explain those feelings I had for this girl and how quickly they came on. Being with her felt so right, so natural, so perfect. I worried about telling her the real truth about my past. It was so hard for her to accept my affection without adding I was a cold-blooded killer to the dynamic. Fight. I should have stayed and fought for her. I know I have the capacity to end this situation. My fear was once I gave myself to the beast within, would I ever be able to regain control? Mae entered the room and wrapped her arms around me, “It’s gonna be okay.” “I don’t really think it is.” I took a big breath, I could feel the power prickling in my veins. I had a lump in my throat, I turned my back to my cousin, embarrassed by my own emotion. It wasn't sadness though, it was anger. I was angry at myself. I needed to keep my sh*t together. I could hear April coming in, her and Mae started talking in hushed voices. They haven’t seen me be emotional since after the events with my Eveyln and Mae. They are right, what they are whispering to each other, they should be afraid. This feels the same. It hurts, it makes me sick, I feel like I am to blame. I feel like I should’ve done more. I need to be in control. No one takes whats mine. Ours. I walked out into the living room. April tried to come up behind me to put a hand on my back but I shook her off, “You gotta calm down Kingston, tell us everything that happened.” I let out a breath, still pacing. “Ashleigh was down in LA for work. On her first night there, she had a run in with a pack wolf. Turns out she wasn’t a rogue, so that wolf recognized her scent from a rival pack. It’s the Venice pack. The next night she smelled that a wolf had gone into her hotel room.” “Sh*t, Venice is nasty.” Mae said. “I’ve heard their Alpha is an absolute psycho.” April added. I put my head in my hands, “Well yeah. He showed up and is mated to her.” Ours. “What?!” April said, her mouth open. Then looked to Mae, they exchanged a knowing look. “Alpha Troy of the Venice Pack is Ashleigh’s mate. He wanted her to quit her job and move in with him immediately, but she asked to finish up her project and he granted her that. But she had like 6 guards tailing her. Her home pack is Ventura, so she called her uncle, the Alpha of that pack, for help.” “Did he help?” Mae asked. “He got her out only to find out he was gonna betray her, give her back for peace negotiations. He said her dedication to him would save so many lives.” FIGHT! “What did she want?” Mae was sheepish with her questioning. She had her own experience with mates, on several different levels. All of which probably scarred her. “She doesn’t want to be with him, but she is scared of him hurting her family, her old pack, me, our pack. She also feels guilty. If a war starts, she doesn't want to be the reason for it. Her old pack seems to think, if she knocks out a couple of pups with him, he would be content to let her leave afterwards.” Mae let out an audible ughhh sound. "I'm sorry Kingston." “He seems like the type to go all out to claiming what is his. So, I imagine he would be the same when it comes to vengeance,” April stated. While Mae glared at her. "He defintely doesn't seem like the type to just let his mate walk away, she was probably right in staying. Is what I was trying to say." “She said she needed to deal with it on her own, and didn’t want to involve me. I offered to challenge him.” “Well that's stupid.” Mae shook her head at me. “You put that sh*t behind you. You know first hand what it's like to have a crazy f*****g mate. You know the lengths they will go. It is not your place to get involved Kingston. You've known this girl like a couple of days.” “I know, I know.” I began pacing again. No. Mine. Fight. "What does she plan on doing?" April asked. "If she said deal with it on her own, what is she going to do?" "I don't f*cking know, I should never have left." I growled and then slammed my fist into the wall. Both my cousins jumped and backed up from me. Backed up from the beast. April switched her tone, trying to calm me, “She wants to keep you safe. I appreciate her for that. Does she know about your past?" April was cautious about how she asked it. "Sort of but not really," I looked out the sliding glass door then looked back at the new hole in my wall. “I should be protecting her.” “Thats your nature, always trying to help and fix.” Mae looked sympathetically at me. "But your safety, the safety of your family. That comes first." “Its more than that, I think I really care about her." I put my hands behind my head, "I can’t stop thinking I could have prevented the terrible things that Evelyn did, if I had just acted sooner.” “Kingston, you are not responsible for what that b*tch did. I know I’ve told you this a hundred times, but I need you to hear me this time. You are only responsible for your own actions.” As Mae was talking to me I couldn’t help but flashback to the day I found her, strapped to a surgical table. Evelyn, my fated mate hovering over her, blood on her hands, wickedly smiling at me. The image pushed my rage forward, there was no stopping it. I may have been able to stuff it down and hold it down under lock and key, but am I making the same mistake? I was responsible for Evelyn and I waited too long. Too f*****g long. I broke that day but only after I had already lost too much. The bloodshed that followed was more than anyone should ever have on their hands. Everyone told me that I did it to protect my loved ones, to avenge my parents. But did I? Did they know how much I enjoyed it? How much pleasure I got from ripping wolves limb from limb? Pushing Evelyn to the brink of death, killing her family in front of her. Then forcing her to accept the rejection with her final gasps of air. I could hear my heart pounding in my ears, my pulse visible in my neck as the veins strained through out my body. I've often thought back to Evelyn, her wicked tendencies and thought perhaps that is why we were mated together. I had this awful raging beast deep within me and she seemed to have the same cruel, twisted soul. Had we been made for each other? Was suppressing the dark twisted part of me a futile endeavor? “So, what are you gonna do about it?” April said, snapping me out of my thoughts. Her voice sounded a bit nervous. Fight.
