CHAPTER NINE After all I had been through, it felt good to be behind the wheel of my car again, to settle into worn leather seats and command a steering wheel for a change. 1993 Lincoln Town Car, baby. Faux wood panels on the dashboard, a stick gear selector, and a functional cassette player. My pops left it to me when he died. He made me take a Greyhound all the way to Omaha with him so he could save a thousand bucks on it. The road trip we took home in this car is a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life. Oh, we stayed in some dumpy motels and ate some baaaad meals, but what I remember most was how Pops opened up and shared memories of his time in Vietnam.
