15 I CLATTERED INTO the station, covered in sweat and flecks of blood. I’d managed to claw my way out of the crowd just as the riot police had shown up. They fired pacifying gas into the crowd. It didn’t do much. The place was a frenzy of fear and loathing. More cops streamed out of the front of the station now. It was all hands on deck. Mendez was in the foyer barking orders at people. Then she saw me. ‘Byron,’ she said. ‘Wash up and suit up right now. Agent Joon has arranged all your jack-in gear.’ The comment threw me off. ‘But…’ I started. ‘No buts,’ she said. ‘Unless you’re going to tell me you found this murderer on your lunch break. Eyes on the prize. You need to get inside and get this cancer at its roots. I’ll sort out the streets. I’m trusting you to do the rest.’ I looked
