The First Day

Shreyashi stood at the entrance of Malhotra Tech, her heart pounding in her chest. Today was her first day as an intern, and the weight of the opportunity settled heavily on her shoulders. She had been given a chance, but in a place like this, a single mistake could cost her everything. As the doors slid open, she stepped into the gleaming lobby, the hustle and bustle of the tech world surrounding her. Employees were scattered across the lobby, some huddled in groups discussing business, while others typed away on laptops in the corner. Shreyashi couldn’t help but feel out of place. Everyone seemed to have a purpose, a direction, while she—an outsider—was just trying to keep up. She took a deep breath and approached the reception desk. “I’m Shreyashi, the new intern. I’m here for my orientation,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. The receptionist barely glanced up, pointing to the elevator. “Floor 25. You’ll meet your manager there. Good luck.” Shreyashi nodded, her hands shaking slightly as she made her way to the elevator. As the doors closed behind her, the silence of the elevator was suffocating. She stared at her reflection in the polished metal, trying to calm her nerves. You can do this. You have to do this, she repeated to herself. Her future depended on it. Her survival depended on it. --- When Shreyashi stepped off the elevator, she was greeted by a sleek, modern office space. Glass walls separated various departments, and rows of employees worked in silence, their eyes fixed on their computer screens. Her manager, a sharp-looking woman named Priya, was waiting for her by the door. “You must be Shreyashi,” Priya said, her voice pleasant but efficient. “Welcome to Malhotra Tech. Let’s get you settled in.” Shreyashi followed her into a small, open-plan workspace. Priya showed her to a desk by the window, where a sleek laptop and a pile of documents awaited her. “Your first task is simple,” Priya continued. “We need you to organize and compile a report on the latest updates for our Solara project. We’re working on it in collaboration with several other companies, and the information needs to be consolidated for our upcoming meeting with the board.” Shreyashi nodded, taking a seat. The task sounded manageable, but she knew that this was just the beginning. Arjun Malhotra's reputation for demanding perfection loomed over her, and she couldn’t afford to fail. As she sifted through the documents and began working on the report, her mind raced. She couldn’t help but remember her past—the beatings from her stepmother, the nights of terror spent locked in her room, hiding from her stepfather’s drunken advances. The thought of her stepfamily made her stomach churn, but she quickly pushed it aside. No time for distractions. This is your shot at a better life, she reminded herself. --- Hours passed in a blur as Shreyashi worked diligently, trying to process the mountain of data and figures. She could feel the weight of the deadline pressing down on her, but she refused to let her fear get the best of her. She was here to prove herself, and that was exactly what she was going to do. At around 3 PM, Arjun Malhotra walked into the office, his presence commanding attention. He was flanked by his assistant, Rina, and the entire room seemed to freeze at his arrival. Arjun’s gaze swept over the room with cold efficiency, stopping momentarily on Shreyashi. She felt a chill run down her spine as his eyes locked onto hers for a brief, intense moment. “Miss Shreyashi,” he said, his voice deep and authoritative. “How is the report coming along?” Shreyashi’s heart skipped a beat. The pressure of his gaze was almost unbearable, but she forced herself to speak calmly. “I’m working on it, sir. I’m almost finished with the first section.” Arjun nodded, his face unreadable. “Good. Don’t make me regret hiring you. I expect excellence.” With that, he turned on his heel and left the office, his assistant trailing behind him. Shreyashi exhaled slowly, her hands trembling slightly. She had survived the first encounter, but she knew the real challenge was just beginning. --- Later that evening, as the office began to empty out, Shreyashi continued working on the report, her focus unyielding. Her mind was filled with a mixture of thoughts—exhaustion from the day’s work, dread of what was to come, and the persistent fear of failing. But she refused to let her past control her. This was her moment, and she would seize it. At the end of the day, Priya came by to check on her progress. “You’re doing well,” Priya said, glancing over the report. “Just make sure to check your sources again before you send it off to Arjun. He doesn’t tolerate mistakes.” Shreyashi nodded, grateful for the guidance. As the office lights dimmed and the last few employees left, she stayed at her desk, working late into the night. Her only focus was getting the report perfect. --- As Shreyashi finally finished and sent the report off, she allowed herself a small sigh of relief. She had made it through her first day. But as she prepared to leave, her phone buzzed with a message from her stepmother. Did you send the money today? Shreyashi’s stomach dropped. She had already given them what little she had left, but it was never enough. The fear of what would happen if she couldn’t send more kept her awake at night. But there was nothing she could do. She sent the money anyway, knowing that she had to keep her stepmother satisfied if she ever wanted to stay out of trouble. Her phone buzzed again, and this time it was her stepfather’s message. Don’t forget who you owe everything to. You better keep your end of the deal. Shreyashi swallowed the lump in her throat, fighting back tears. She looked around the empty office, the dim lights casting long shadows across the room. It felt like she was still trapped, despite being in this new, seemingly brighter world. But she couldn’t afford to let herself break down. Not now. Not ever. She turned off her phone, gathered her things, and left the building, the cold night air brushing against her face. She had made it through the first day, but the road ahead was long. And as she stepped into the night, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her journey was only just beginning. --- _____ ________
