Under His watchful eyes

1030 Words
The days at Malhotra Tech began to blend together, each one filled with new challenges and the ever-looming presence of Arjun Malhotra. The demands of the job were high, but Shreyashi had come to realize that it wasn’t just the work that kept her on edge—it was the constant awareness of Arjun’s watchful eyes. She couldn’t deny that there was something about him, something that made her heart race whenever he passed by her desk or spoke to her in that sharp, commanding tone. It wasn’t just his authority, or the way his very presence seemed to fill a room. There was an underlying intensity in his gaze that Shreyashi couldn’t quite place, but it made her feel as though every movement, every word, every breath she took was being scrutinized. --- It was early one afternoon when Shreyashi sat at her desk, diligently working through another set of reports. The office was buzzing with activity, but her mind was distracted by the quiet tension that had been growing in the pit of her stomach. Her stepfather’s threats, her stepmother’s cruelty, and now the unsettling feeling that someone had been following her—it was all becoming too much. And then, she felt it—the weight of a gaze on her. Without looking up, she knew that Arjun was standing in the doorway. She could feel his presence like a magnetic force, drawing all attention toward him. The silence in the room seemed to grow heavier, and she fought to maintain her composure, refusing to acknowledge the flutter in her chest. Just as she gathered her courage to look up, she caught a quick glance of him. His eyes were sharp, studying her as though she were an equation he needed to solve. There was a faint flicker of something in his gaze—something she couldn’t quite interpret. Approval? Curiosity? Or perhaps the same distance he kept with everyone else? She quickly averted her eyes, pretending to focus on the papers in front of her, but her heart had begun to race, and the warmth of his stare lingered on her skin like an invisible mark. --- Later that afternoon, as Shreyashi sat in a meeting room with a few colleagues, preparing for a presentation, she could feel Arjun’s presence again. He wasn’t in the room, but his voice, clear and commanding, carried through the walls. She couldn’t stop herself from glancing toward his office every now and then, her mind wandering to thoughts of him. It wasn’t just the intensity of his gaze that made her feel so unsettled—it was the way he seemed to keep track of everything. Even from across the room, Shreyashi felt as if he could see right through her. She could almost hear his voice in her head, judging every move, every glance. Was she doing well? Was she performing up to his standards? She couldn’t afford to be distracted. Yet, the feeling of being observed never quite left her. --- The next day, during the lunch break, Shreyashi stepped out of the building to get some fresh air. The warm sunlight on her face was a temporary escape from the oppressive atmosphere of the office. She leaned against the railing outside, closing her eyes for a moment and trying to forget the stress that had been building up. But then, she heard footsteps approaching. Her eyes snapped open, and there, standing a few feet away, was Arjun. His gaze locked with hers instantly, and for a brief moment, she could feel the weight of his attention all over again. “I didn’t expect to find you here,” he remarked casually, his tone clipped but not unkind. “Taking a break?” Shreyashi nodded, feeling suddenly self-conscious under his gaze. “Yes, sir. Just needed a moment to clear my head.” Arjun didn’t respond immediately. He stood there, looking out at the street for a moment, before turning his attention back to her. There was an air of calculation in his eyes, as though he were considering something, weighing her words against the person she had been when she first walked into his office. “You’re doing well,” he said finally, his voice still cool but with a hint of something else—approval? “Just make sure you stay focused. This company doesn’t tolerate distractions.” Shreyashi could barely respond, the weight of his words sinking in. Was he trying to encourage her? Or was this just another test, another challenge she had to prove herself against? Before she could process the interaction fully, Arjun turned and walked away, his presence lingering like an unanswered question in the air. --- The rest of the day passed in a blur. Shreyashi tried to shake off the thoughts of Arjun, focusing instead on the work in front of her. But his words, his gaze, everything about him seemed to haunt her, even when he wasn’t around. As the workday came to a close, she grabbed her things and prepared to leave. The office was starting to empty out, but the weight of the lingering tension still pressed on her chest. Shreyashi didn’t notice it at first—until she reached the elevator. There, standing a few feet away, was Arjun. His back was to her, and he seemed engrossed in a conversation on his phone. Yet, as soon as the elevator doors opened, his gaze flicked to hers, and she froze for a split second. It was brief—just a passing moment. But in that split second, she could feel the weight of his attention once more. He wasn’t saying anything, but it was as if every glance was a silent evaluation, judging her, measuring her in ways she couldn’t understand. Shreyashi quickly entered the elevator, trying to ignore the rapid beating of her heart. She wasn’t sure what to make of it. Was Arjun truly watching her? Or was it all in her head? She didn’t have an answer, but one thing was certain—she couldn’t shake the feeling that the intensity of his gaze was becoming a fixture in her life. ---
