The sky over the Black Expanse was unnaturally still.
Tristan stood at the prow of the wind-cruiser Wraithwing, the cold gusts from the northern peaks biting through his cloak. Beneath him, the sea of ash stretched endless and bleak, scorched by the ancient wars that once tore gods from their thrones. Behind him, Ariana and Kaela stood in silence, watching the horizon like sentinels.
None of them spoke of Selene.
None of them spoke of the Temple.
But they all felt the same truth in their bones—something had changed.

Five Days Earlier — The Ruins of Firefall Bastion
They had found nothing but blood and bones.
Once a stronghold of the Flamebound, Firefall was now a shattered relic, its towers broken, its gates clawed open by unnatural forces. The Emberguard were gone—vaporized in what Kaela called a soulfire detonation. No ordinary flame left bones scorched to ash, hearts crystallized.
“Lucien did this,” Ariana whispered, kneeling beside a melted helm. “This wasn’t conquest. It was a message.”
Tristan’s fists clenched. “He wants us to know he’s not hiding. He’s becoming something worse than a king.”
Kaela didn’t answer. Her eyes were fixed on the sky.
A dark omen rode the wind.

Now – The Frozen Divide
The Wraithwing crossed into the icy north, the last threshold between mortal realms and the cursed lands of the Underflame. The peaks of Kaemlir rose like broken teeth, their surfaces glinting with ancient runes and petrified blood.
As they landed at the base camp of the Frostclad Nomads, their presence drew attention. The Frostclads were fierce, white-skinned warriors with eyes like quartz and tattoos that shimmered with magic.
Their chieftess, Ysera Icebone, greeted them in silence, her gaze lingering on Kaela.
“I smell the flame in you,” she said. “But not just fire. Grief.”
Kaela bowed. “We seek the Gate of the Shivering Crown.”
Ysera's eyes narrowed. “That gate opens only for one who has touched both fire and ice. One who has walked the balance.”
Her gaze fell on Tristan.
“I see now,” she whispered. “You carry the fire. But your heart... your heart is turning cold.”
Tristan looked away.
---
That Night — The Ice Trial
To reach the Gate, Tristan had to pass the Trial of Silence.
He was taken to the glacier caverns alone, stripped of weapons, and left in total darkness. There, his memories came for him.
Selene’s laughter.
Lucien’s betrayal.
His mother’s dying breath.
And the image of the Second Crown—burning, waiting.
At the heart of the cavern, he saw a mirror made of ice. Inside it: himself, but twisted—his eyes golden, his face crowned, his hand burning with power.
The mirror-self spoke. “You don’t need them. Not Ariana. Not Kaela. Not Selene. You have me.”
Tristan struck the mirror.
It didn’t shatter.
It laughed.
“You’re already becoming me.”
He screamed and shattered it with his bare fists.
When he emerged at dawn, his hands were bleeding, his eyes empty.
The gate opened.
---
Beyond the Gate — The Ice Crown Citadel
They traveled through frost forests where ghosts whispered lullabies and ice beasts watched with knowing eyes. The Ice Crown Citadel stood at the heart—a forgotten fortress built by the last Ice Monarchs, now haunted by memory and guarded by none.
Inside, Selene waited.
Bound in chains of crystal, her body floated above the altar of the Underflame, her eyes closed, her pulse faint.
Lucien stood beside her, robed in ice and fire.
“Did you think I would leave her unguarded?” he said.
He looked… older. Not by age, but by weight—like someone who had touched eternity and returned broken.
Ariana stepped forward. “Let her go.”
Lucien smiled. “I have. She chose to come.”
Selene’s eyes opened. And she screamed.
The spell fractured the room.
---
The battle was a storm.
Kaela summoned the Inferno Blade, a weapon she hadn’t used since her blood oath. Ariana moved like a ghost, slicing through constructs of snow and shadow. Tristan faced Lucien alone.
“Why, brother?” he shouted. “Why become this?”
Lucien replied, “Because the world doesn’t need another king. It needs a god. And gods don’t beg.”
Their swords clashed.
The room erupted in light and darkness.
Selene broke her bonds mid-battle, collapsing. Kaela caught her. “You fool,” she whispered. “Why didn’t you fight him?”
Selene looked up, tears frozen on her cheeks. “Because part of me... part of me still loves him.”
Ariana froze.
Tristan hesitated.
Lucien smiled.
“Then you’ll understand when I do this.”
He drove his blade into the altar.
The Underflame awoke.
---
A c***k spread through the ice crown above.
A second crown emerged from the flames—not of fire, but of ice and shadow.
Lucien took it.
Tristan screamed.
Selene collapsed.
The fortress trembled.
And far away, in a palace of light, the Oracle stirred.
“The twins are awakening,” she whispered.
“One shall burn. One shall freeze. Both shall die.”
