The next morning arrived in pale grey light and fog—like the city itself was holding its breath.
Tristan hadn’t slept since the dream.
He walked into Leclair Tower in silence, his steps deliberate, face unreadable. The marble lobby felt colder than usual. He ignored the greetings of board members, staff, and secretaries. Only one person caught his eye.
Selene.
She was already in his office, standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands folded neatly in front of her, black blazer perfectly fitted to her frame. But something was off. Her body was tense. Her eyes distant.
“I need answers,” Tristan said, closing the door behind him.
She turned slowly, expression calm. “About?”
“The crown in my dream. The battlefield. You. Her.” He stepped closer. “What does it mean?”
Selene inhaled softly, then crossed the room and opened a drawer. From it, she drew a small, glass box. Inside sat a thin piece of parchment—older than anything Tristan had seen so far.
“This,” she said, placing it between them, “is the second part of the prophecy. It speaks of ‘the Key.’ A person who will unlock the Crown of Fire… not through blood, but through bond.”
Tristan frowned. “So I’m not the key?”
“You’re the vessel,” she said. “The weapon. But the key is someone who loves you. Someone you love back.”
His throat tightened. “And if I never love anyone?”
Selene looked down. “Then the curse consumes you. The empire burns. And the crown falls into darkness.”
Tristan turned away, pacing.
“And what about Ariana?” he said. “She said we were bound. That our families sealed something together.”
“She’s not lying,” Selene admitted. “But Ariana is dangerous. Her bloodline carries ambition like poison in its veins. If she becomes your key, she’ll twist your power to serve her own end.”
He looked back at her. “Then what about you?”
Selene’s eyes met his. For a second, something flickered there—fear, desire, guilt.
“I wasn’t meant to be an option,” she whispered.
Tristan stepped closer, the space between them collapsing.
“But you are,” he said. “And that’s the problem, isn’t it?”
Selene didn’t answer. Her silence said enough.
And then—without permission or hesitation—he kissed her.
It was sudden, but not rough. It was the kind of kiss that came from confusion and fire and months of hidden glances and unsaid things. Selene didn’t pull away. Not right away. Her hands gripped his coat. Her heart pounded against his chest.
But then—she broke it.
“No,” she whispered, breathless. “Don’t do this.”
“Why?”
“Because if you choose me…” her voice cracked, “…they’ll kill you.”

That night, Selene stood on the roof of Leclair Tower, eyes to the stars, whispering a message into the wind.
A glowing raven descended on her shoulder—an ancient messenger of the Watchers.
She closed her eyes and sent her words through it.
“He’s beginning to feel for me.
And I for him.
Forgive me, but I won’t stop it.
If the curse must burn,
Then let us burn together.”
The raven took flight.

In the shadows beneath Morrow Tower, Ariana stood in front of a secret vault. She pressed her sigil into a stone crest, and the vault door groaned open.
Inside lay something ancient—wrapped in chains and velvet.
She unwrapped it slowly, revealing a glowing dagger with a curved blade and red-gold inscriptions.
The Kissblade.
Forged by fire-magic.
Used only once in history.
To bind a Leclair heir forever.
She smiled.
“If Selene wants his heart,” she whispered, “I’ll take his soul.”

Meanwhile, in the mansion, Tristan stood alone in his father’s study, staring into the fireplace once more.
No visions this time. No voices.
Only a question burning in his chest:
Who would he choose?
The girl who was born to love him…
Or the one who wasn’t meant to?
