Between two Worlds

Despite Olivia’s reassurances, the distance between them only seemed to grow. Ethan had pulled further away, spending more time at the hospital with his father. Each day that passed, Olivia felt herself slipping into a quiet desperation—she was losing him, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She tried to be understanding, to give him space, but the isolation was eating at her. She couldn’t help but wonder if it was more than just his father’s health that was keeping him away. Was he retreating because of his past? Or was it something deeper, something he hadn’t been able to articulate? It was during one of these long, lonely nights that Olivia decided to confront him. She could no longer bear the silence. She found Ethan in the living room, his face cast in shadows as he stared blankly at the television. He looked like a man who had aged years in just a matter of weeks. “I need to talk to you,” Olivia said, her voice low but determined. Ethan turned his head slowly, his gaze distant, as if he hadn’t heard her. “About what?” She stood in front of him, her hands at her sides, trying to steady herself. “About us.” Ethan’s brow furrowed, but he didn’t say anything. He seemed too tired, too worn down to fight her on this. “I don’t know what’s happening, Ethan,” she continued, her voice trembling. “I don’t know how we went from being this close… to this.” She gestured to the space between them, feeling the heaviness of the unspoken words. “I can’t keep pretending everything’s fine. It’s not. And I don’t know how to fix it when you won’t let me in.” Ethan’s jaw tightened. “I’m trying, Liv. I really am.” She shook her head, stepping closer to him. “Trying isn’t enough anymore. I need you to be here. Not just physically, but emotionally. I need to know that you’re not running away from me.” “I’m not running away,” he said quickly, but there was a defensiveness to his tone that she hadn’t heard before. “I just… I don’t know how to handle this. I don’t know how to balance everything that’s happening.” Olivia closed her eyes for a moment, trying to steady the storm of emotions inside her. “I get it. Your father is sick. But you’re not the only one who’s hurting, Ethan. I’m here too. I can’t help you if you won’t let me.” He stood up abruptly, pacing. “You don’t get it, Liv! Every time I try to move forward, my past pulls me back. I don’t know how to be the man I need to be for you when all I can think about is the fact that I might lose him. That I might have lost everything before I even had a chance to fix it.” She reached out, her hand on his arm, pulling him back toward her. “I’m not asking you to be perfect, Ethan. I’m asking you to be real. To face the things that scare you and let me help you. Let me be the one you lean on when things get hard.” His eyes darkened as if he were fighting with himself, then, slowly, he sank back down onto the couch. He rubbed his face in frustration. “I don’t know if I can do this, Liv. I don’t know if I can do any of this.” Olivia sat beside him, her heart aching for him. “Then let’s take it one step at a time. Together.”
