A Line crossed

Ethan’s fingers twitched at his side, as if he wanted to reach for her but was holding himself back. The space between them felt suffocating, charged with an energy that neither of them could ignore. Olivia knew she was standing on the edge of something dangerous, something reckless. And yet, she tilted her chin up just slightly, her breath catching when she saw the way Ethan’s eyes darkened at the movement. His voice was low, almost a whisper. “You have no idea how hard I’m trying to be good right now.” A shiver ran through her. “Then don’t.” The words slipped out before she could stop them, before she could remind herself why this was a bad idea. Ethan’s breath hitched, and something inside him snapped. In one fluid movement, he reached for her, his hand wrapping gently around her wrist, his fingers tracing over her pulse, which was racing beneath his touch. “Tell me to stop,” he murmured. She should. She knew she should. But when he leaned in just enough that she could feel his warmth, when his thumb brushed against the inside of her wrist in a slow, deliberate caress, the only thing she could whisper was— “I don’t want you to.” Ethan exhaled sharply, his restraint unraveling. His hand slid to her waist, his fingers pressing lightly against the fabric of her scrubs, pulling her just a fraction closer. “Liv…” The way he said her name sent heat pooling low in her stomach. Her body betrayed her, gravitating toward him, craving the warmth of his touch. But then, footsteps echoed down the hallway. The spell shattered. Ethan released her like he had been burned, his body stiffening. Olivia stepped back, her breath unsteady, her heart still pounding in her chest. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of what almost happened—what still burned in the space between them—settled heavy in the air. Finally, Ethan let out a rough laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “That… probably shouldn’t have happened.” Olivia exhaled shakily, forcing herself to nod. “No. It shouldn’t have.” But as she looked at him—his chest rising and falling a little too fast, his lips slightly parted, his gaze still heated—she knew the truth. This wasn’t over. Not even close. And next time, she wasn’t sure either of them would have the strength to stop.
