Story of Sight

I woke up to the calls of birds singing, early morning dew clinging to the grass. Looking at my alarm clock I noticed I still had two hours before school started. Wanting to make the most of my time, I threw on a pair of yogas, and a matching sports bra before heading out into the woods just behind the building. The trees made for perfect training grounds, as well as excellent shade from the waking sun blazing in the sky. Most of the wolves would train late at night, or after school, I found solace in training before anyone else even woke up. After heading back, I quickly showered and got ready before joining the rest of the crew that lived in this complex downstairs for breakfast. I greeted the regulars, who oftentimes spent more time at this bar than their own homes. Then headed to my corner table in the back, Talon sat there with Siriene. The two of them were deep into their conversation, and jumped when I sat down next to them. “Kal! You scared the fur off me.” Siriene held her heart, mock fear in her voice as Talon pushed a plate in my direction. “Eat up Kal, the Boss says you're gonna be busy today.” I sighed, taking a piece of bacon off the plate, Si grabbing the leftover sausage. ‘Busy huh, I suppose that means I won’t be working up front today’ I thought while chewing on the overdone meat. The air seemed tense, both Talon and Si looking uncomfortable as the silence droned on. Before I got the chance to ask why, two muscular arms wrapped around me. The scent of pine and cigarettes filtered past my nose, encasing my body in warmth as familiar scars littered the man's arms. The two beside me shook their heads indignantly as the male released me. He sat down next to Talon, patting his shoulder and I noticed another scar along the edge of his eyebrow. “Baron, how’d you wind up with another scar when you were only supposed to be cutting wood for the fire?” I laughed, curious of the clumsy story he was about to admit to us. Baron was the pack's warrior head, as clumsy as he was, when he was fighting he was the best. His instincts far surpassed any one of us, not to mention the reflexes he had when fighting, yet somehow all of that natural talent went out the window when doing basic chores. Baron was my father figure in this crazy place, so I knew better than anyone how completely different the two sides of him were. “So the thing about that..” he chuckled nervously before going into detail about some squirrel startling him, causing him to trip over some uncut logs and land the axe a little too close for comfort. As he relayed the strange yet unbelievably hilarious story, the three of us laughed, amused at the dramatic effects he threw in. Walking to school took forty-five minutes since we lived on the outskirts of the town. Once there, Talon turned to me with a small grin. He reached out, fixing the small bow that covered my ears before turning away with Si. The way they had grinned towards each other unsettled me, and I knew that meant they were hiding something from me. I waved a short goodbye to Talon and Siriene’s backs, as they had already left, before heading in the opposite direction. Classes on campus were split into different courses, and since I started with my basic classes, mine were located in the northern side of school. Whereas Talon and Siriene were in the south for training. “Kal!!!” A vaguely familiar voice called out, turning around I found it belonged to the male from last night. He jogged up to me before smiling wide, and showing a transfer paper to me. “I actually just moved to this area to live with my father. Didn't expect to run into you so soon.” He looked flustered, a spread of light pink grazing over his cheekbones accenting the already defined structure. Nodding I glanced over the paper he handed me, and noticed we shared the same schedule. Students were blocked into different groups, and each group shared the same schedule for the first six classes. The last two were separated by station in the pack, or what you would go into after school. “You know the way, new kid?” I asked, barely listening as I continued forward. His footsteps legged behind a second before rushing to catch back up, the same goofy smile gracing his lips. “Call me Crest, and I know the general direction, I think?” His answer sounded more like a question towards the end, still I remained silent until we got through the building's front doors. Stopping just out of the way, I turned to him. “You should know the basics of how classes work around here, yeah? ” I waited for a nod before continuing. “Then you should know that anyone in the same block as you will be in your first six periods. It looks like you're in Block X, the same as me. I can take you through your first day, but after that you're on your own, new kid.” Quickly backing away and turning I head towards the first hour with Crest on my heels. He stayed silent the entire way, and I was thankful for the quiet. We were earlier than the rest of class, still having twenty minutes before school began. Walking in I dropped my books off in the back where I sat and walked back up to the front where the guy was watching nervously. I gave a small sigh as I rolled my eyes, he looked like a kicked puppy. “Crest.” His head shot up in shock before glee radiated off his body. “Come with me, I’ll take you to the teacher for homeroom so he can introduce you.” Not waiting, I headed to the room down the hall, knocking on the door twice before entering. “Sir, this is the new student for block X. I showed him the first classroom before bringing him here.” A skinny looking man turned around, glossed brown hair slicked back with a penguin patterned tie to match his deep blue suit. The teacher was older, but kind and knew how to give his students a good laugh. “Ah yes, Mr. Kimemura contacted me about his son transferring here. Welcome to Seidu High, I’m your homeroom teacher Mr.Shisheo. Thank you Kal for bringing him here, you can head back to class now.” Glancing over to the boy, I gave a curt nod. By the time I got back to the classroom half the students had shown up already. It was five minutes until the bell, so everyone was already sitting with their books out, finishing last minute assignments. Flipping open my journal, I wrote a new poem about the new kid. Writing was my talent, and I had a poem for everyone I’ve met, and more than a couple for the people I’m close to. Si does the art to match my poetry, she can look at a person and see their soul. So she draws the first image she gets of them, and we put it together in a book I keep at home. I reach into my bag to grab my phone, sending a quick text to her. Kal: Hey Si, have you met Mr. Kimemura’s son yet? Si: The kid you beat up yesterday?? Not particularly, why?? Kal: I wanted to know if you’ve drawn him yet, and I didn’t beat him up. I only kicked him. Si: Oh?? Taken an interest in someone???? Finally! Kal: Si. You know that’s not true, he’s just in the same block as me and I got the poem done already. Si: Ahahah, I know I know, but it’d be nice if you could get to know people Kal. I do have the drawing actually, I made it last night. I can give it to you after school? Kal: Sounds good, Thanks. Putting my phone away I heard the door slide open to reveal the teacher and Crest. As soon as he looked up, our eyes met and he visibly relaxed. ‘Even social butterflies get nervous, I guess.’ Mr.Shisheo cleared his throat before pointing to Crest. “Students, this is your new classmate Crest Kimemura. He just transferred here, but he is a full fledged member of this pack, I won’t tolerate any seclusion. Now, Kimemura, you can go sit in the back next to Miss Zetlo.” Waving him off, Crest walked to the back hesitant, once he got close enough, I nodded the desk beside me. After settling into the desk he turned back to me, a bright smile on full display as he passed me a note. Kal, Thank you for helping me out today! I was a little nervous about being the new kid at school again, and I'm really sorry about last night. Admittedly, I was a little shocked at the note. It wasn’t uncommon for there to be a bit of hesitancy when meeting a new pack, but I wasn’t expecting him to have actually been worried about it. I spent more time wondering what he meant by ‘new kid at school again’ than I did actually listening to our teacher. Homeroom went by slowly as I refused to meet his gaze until it was time to go to our next class. I could feel his eyes searching for mine, looking over at every chance to try and get my attention.
