Gabi’s POV *knock knock knock * “Gabi wake up” Ben was banging on my door. I lifted my head up and saw that it was still dark outside so I grabbed my phone to check the time and it was 5 o'clock. I tried to lay back down but he just continued to bang on the door. “Get up Gabs or you'll be late.” “We're not leaving until 6. I have time,” I groaned. I don't think that was an acceptable answer because he stormed in and pulled the blanket off me. “Ben!” I sat up in a huff, “ give it back.” “Nope.” I grabbed the pillow from behind me to toss it at him but he dodged it with ease. I reached back to grab another one just when Rob walked in. “Hey, hey. What's the problem.” He looked between my angry expression to Ben's fake innocent smile as he half heartedly hid my blanket behind his back. “Nothing. I was just waking her up like you told me to.” “I told you to wake her up, not the whole pack house.” “Not my fault she overreacted… oof.” Thanks to Rob's distraction I got a clear shot at his head. “Ha!” “You little.” Ben picked up the pillow and was about to beam it at me but Rob snatched it out of his hand. “Enough, both of you.” “He started it. He just came in here-” “And I'm ending it. Now would the two of you get ready.” He put the pillow down on the bed before walking out. “I'm leaving at 6 o'clock with or without you.” Once Rob left I looked over at Ben fully annoyed. “Am I gonna have to be woken up by you like this everyday.” “Of course not, just on the days I wake up before you.” I wanted nothing more than to wipe that smug smile off his face, he's lucky I'm not a match for him. “Get out.” “Fine, but only because you'll need as much time as possible to look at least semi decent.” I tried to throw another pillow at the jerk but he managed to escape. I got out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. He wasn't wrong, I look a mess. I tried to keep the braids mom did for me as long as possible but if I leave them in any longer taking them out will no longer be an option. I went about my morning routine stalling for as long as possible before I had to deal with my hair, I reluctantly took out the braids. Once my hair was as detangled as I could get it I pulled it up into a messy bun and made my way to the kitchen. “It's about time. Any later and I would have had to go get you.” Ben was sitting at the counter playing on his phone with an empty plate in front of him. He looked really handsome dressed in his suit. He didn't have a tie on and left the first two buttons undone. With his hair pulled back into a bun a few curls framing his face he looked more like a mafia man then an intern. “It wasn't even that long.” Looking around I noticed Rob was nowhere to be seen. “What's for breakfast?” I asked, looking at his plate. “If you wanted breakfast you should have gotten up earlier. Dad's waiting for us, we gotta go.” He put his plate in the sink then grabbed two paper bags that were hiding behind him. “seriously?” checking the time on my phone it was 5:48. “It's not that late, don't y’all have any cereal?” Ben snorted, “no.” before waving an empty green travel mug at me. “Juice or coffee.” “Juice I guess. Coffee is gross.” “Noted.” Ben filled the mug with orange juice before handing It to me. He grabbed an almost identical one from the counter, it being blue instead of green. “Let's go.” I followed Ben through the pack house. There were a few people up and about each bowing their head in respect to Ben as we walked by while giving me curious glances. I moved closer to Ben trying to avoid their gaze. “Don't worry about them.” Ben smiled down at me when I grabbed onto his suit jacket. “It is rare to have “outsiders”, he air quoted the word, “on packlands.” “Why the air quotes?” “Because even though you weren't born here you are a born member.” We stepped out of the house and made our way down the steps towards the two waiting cars. Rob was standing in front of the car he drove when he first brought me here. The other was a sports car with Joe and Aiden standing in front of it. Seeing the two of them side by side was a treat. Joe was dressed in a suit, tie and all, but his sleeves were rolled up his forearms His suit jacket draped over his shoulder. Aiden on the other hand was dressed in nothing but gym shorts and sneakers. He smirked and waved as he caught me looking and I had to turn away to hide the blush creeping across my face. “About time.” Rob said as we approached. “Two more minutes and you would have been left.” “Would he really leave us?” I whispered To Ben. “Yup. Also no point in whispering wolves have scary good hearing.” Ben went to greet his friends while I debated which way to go. “Gabi.” Rob stood watching me as he held the passenger door open. “Come on or we'll be late.” I made my way over to the car. “Gabi, wait.” Ben ran up to me and put the two bags he was carrying in my hands. “Breakfast, lunch.” he pointed at them. He drew me close, placing a kiss on my forehead before running back and getting into the driver's seat of the sports car behind us. I climbed into Rob's car before digging through the bag Ben gave me. Inside was an egg and sausage sandwich on an English muffin. I sat back and quietly ate my breakfast as we made our way back to the only normal thing left in my life. It was a little before seven when we arrived in front of the school. Rob parked the car and as I was gathering my things so I could climb out he was already exiting the car. “What are you doing?” My face scrunched up in confusion. He stopped halfway to look at me, one eyebrow raised in the air. “Getting out of the car.” “Yeah, but why?” He let out a heavy sigh, “is there a reason I shouldn't?” He challenged. *knock knock* Startled, I looked out my window to see Ben tapping on the glass, Joe standing right behind him. “What's the hold up?” Before I could get myself together Rob was already at the other side of the car. Frustrated, I climbed out and looked between the three of them. “Why are you all getting out of the car, don't you have to go to work?” “We've got time,” Ben shrugged. “Thought we'd check out what humans pass off as education.” “Rob.” “What?” “What do you mean what? You can't just loiter around school grounds. What if someone sees you?” “Then they see us. I'm not sure what the problem is.” “The problem is that this is the last normal part of my life left and I don't need three very large, very intimidating men, dressed like a mafia boss,” I singled out Ben, “ escorting Into school and starting rumors.” “Gabi relax, there's barely anyone here this early, plus I only came today so I could talk to your principal and update your paperwork.” “Yeah, and what rumors have ever started because a big brother wanted to take his little sister to school.” Ben crossed his arms over his chest, his clothes straining against the muscles beneath. I looked up at this huge man with his serious expression as he scanned the area around us and held my hand to my head, feeling a headache coming. “They're gonna think I'm related to thugs.” I mumbled to myself. Joe laughed. “It's not funny.” I hit his arm and he held his hands up in surrender. “Alright, cut it out, the faster I ge-” Rob stopped abruptly scanning the area while pushing me behind him. I was about to ask what he was doing but looking at all three of their faces caused me to stop. “You boys smell that?” “Smell what?” “Sure do. It was faint earlier but it's getting stronger.” “What exactly are you smelling, I don't smell anything.” “Wolves, Gabi. We are not the only wolves here.” I started to look around but I didn't see or smell anything. ‘Ivey’ I called out to my own wolf hoping she could shine some light on the situation. ‘Do you notice something I'm not?’ ‘of course. You've been classmates with them for years. Watch the tree line, they are coming.’ “Ivey said they're coming from the woods.” I pointed to the woods that were situated not too far from the school. Three sets of eyes follow my finger. They watched intensely while slowly moving between me and them. “She said they were my classmates. I don't think you need to be worried.” “hush.” As soon as Robert spoke a group of seven teenagers came walking out of the woods. I recognize some of them but not all. ‘they're wolves? How can you tell?” ‘By the way they smell.” “How could you possibly smell them from all the way over there?” The three of them looked back at my outburst. “Oops, didn't mean to say that out loud.” We all looked back at the group of teens to see that one splint from the group. While the rest headed towards the school he was heading towards us. I know him. He's Dylan Rodgers vice captain of the school's basketball team. Tall, muscular, and what most would call extremely handsome. He kept his black hair faded on the sides, the top just long enough to brush across his broad forehead. He had a slightly hooked nose, and full lips that curved into a warm smile. He had deep-set brown eyes that were framed by heavy brows, a strong jawline with a defined chin, while his high cheekbones added a sharp angularity to his face. He stopped a few feet away, bowing his head in respect. “Beta Black.” “You know who I am but who are you?” “I'm Dylan Rodgers sir. My father was Beta Samuel Rodgers of the New Moon Pack.” “Huh, that is a name I haven't heard in a while. I wasn't aware he had a kid.” “He had two, me and my younger sister Lily. Most people don't know about us because my mother is a rouge.” Rob looked down at him skeptically, “why are you here though? Your place is at your fathers Pack is it not?” “As one of Alpha Gantts allies you should know what happened to him.” Rob Nodded his head. “I heard. He was a good man, that still doesn't explain why you're here.” “It was a lie. My father knew Alpha Gantt would never accept his mate so he kept us hidden. When he found out about her he was forced to choose. When he tried to leave he was killed and it was staged as a rogue attack. Alpha Gantt doesn’t know we exist, so my uncle moved us to a collective.” “and the others?” “All rogue kids. I figured since I don't smell rogue you would be less likely to kill us for being near your daughter.” He looked down at me but Ben growled at him before stepping forward, completely blocking me from view. “We mean no harm. We've been living amongst humans our entire lives, in fact my uncle is the principal here. He had a feeling Gabrielle didn't know what she was so we've been keeping an eye on her.” This time it was Rob who let out a low growl. “No bad intentions I assure you. We've been waiting for her first shift so we could let her know she's not alone. Never thought you'd show up.” “And what makes you so sure about that?” “Well... because you hadn't.” more and more kids begin to appear as time continues on, most shooting curious glances our way. “Threat averted can we stop whatever this is now, people are staring.” “She's right, wouldn't want any unwanted attention. It was nice meeting you. See you around Gabrielle.” With that he walked off without a single glance back. “How well do you know that boy?” “I don't. Well not personally, he's a grade above me and plays basketball that's about it. Why?” “I don't trust him. Make sure you keep your distance.” I rolled my eyes and was about to make a smart remark when Ben tensed up in front of me and started looking around frantically. “Ben?” He ignored me and started taking small steps forward Scanning the face of everyone that walked by. Almost like he was looking for someone, but who would he know here?” “Oh shit.” I looked at Joe hoping he would explain. He looked down at me briefly before turning his attention back to Ben. “I think his mate is close.” Ben stopped spinning in circles, finally locked on a location. “GABI-KINS!” “Oh no.” I watched as Steph excitedly made her way over to me. “No. No, no, no. She can't be.” I looked at Robert and saw him trying to hide his smile. He was watching happily as Ben's eyes followed Steph while she walked past. “She can't be his mate, he'll put her in danger!” I angrily whispered to Rob. “Says Who?” “Ivey. I wanted to tell her but Ivey said it wouldn't be safe if she knew, for either of us.” “Gabi, why didn't you answer? I called you twice.” She reached to give me a hug that I happily accepted, squeezing her just a bit too tight by the sound of her protest. “Sorry things have been a bit hectic.” Ben started to make his way back over to us, his eyes never leaving Steph. ‘ She's right but there are exceptions to every rule. Humans knowing we exist could be dangerous For us but the Goddess would not have picked her if she couldn't be trusted with the truth.’ Rob linked me. ‘What about her, she won't be safe. You said it yourself that I'm not even safe and I have a wolf.’ ‘I never said you weren't. I said going out alone wasn't safe. As long as I'm alive nothing will hurt you.’ ‘And Steph?’ “Yeah, sure. Hey Mr. Black.” She gave him a quick wave then glanced at Ben behind her and Joe beside me as if just noticing their existence. “Stephanie.” “It's just Steph, I feel like I'm in trouble if you use the whole thing.” “Then it's just Robert, or Rob. No need to make me feel older than I am.” He smiled at her. “That right there is my nephew Jonah,” he reached over grabbing Ben's shoulder, pulling him closer. “And this is my son Benji.” As mad as I am, I still had to fight the laugh that escaped when I watched Ben's reaction to Rob trying to embarrass him. Joe just let it out. “It's just Ben,” he elbowed Rob in his side before offering his hand. “Now, Benny, no need to get embarrassed, we're all family here.” If Joe had not backed up when he did he might have Gotten hit. “Hey, we use our words young man.” Ben was about to swing again but paused when he heard Steph laugh. ‘Ben won't let anything come close enough to even think about hurting her.’ Looking at the expression on Ben's face as he watches her laugh makes me think that maybe he's right. “Sorry I didn't mean to laugh.” She held out her hand and he took it eagerly. “Nice to meet you.” “Pleasures mine.” I'm not sure if Steph noticed because guys are always staring at her but Ben was starting to look creepy. ‘Stop, you look like a creep.’ ‘How old is she?’ ‘eww.’ “Okay, introductions are over, will you guys leave now.” I tried, unsuccessful, to push Ben back towards his car. “You know I got the feeling she doesn't want us here.” “I don't, people are staring so please leave. Plus if you keep standing here you'll be late for work.” “So what, my uncle is the boss. What are they gonna do, fire me?” He placed his arm on Rob's shoulder and smiled. “They won't but I will. Gabi’s right, you two need to go.” I stuck my tongue out at him “Uncle Rob.” “Go.” “ Fine.” Joe pushed my head to the side as he walked past me. “ Let's go Benny.” he grabbed him by his jacket, effectively pulling him away. “We'll be here at 3:15 to pick you up.” He called over his shoulder while Ben fought to get loose.
