She stopped still. She stared at Lyle. Her cheeks were pink from exertion and her lips were parted to draw heavy, deep breaths. She raised one hand and dropped it on the shoulder of the chained…man. Lyle knew it was a man the moment Lyle’s mother’s palm landed on his shoulder. How Lyle knew that, he had no clue. He only knew the truth of it. “It’s time to wake up, Lyle.” Her voice was warm, loving, but as firm as it had been when she’s scolded him for following a stupid child’s suggestion that Lyle jump off the roof of a shed that was far too high for any child. “There is no shame in playing the role of beta.
