In the days that followed, Mari spent more time asleep than awake. One day she awoke at midday. When the shops opened after Hogmanay, the lads had bought a new mattress and bedding for Mari, and leines for themselves. Everything seemed to return to their former routine. Life looked very much like before, except at night Mari would not sleep alone in her room. Alex, Charlie, and Hugh took turns sleeping on the floor between the window and bed.
