The Brother

Kael walked silently down the hallway until he reached Gretel’s room. As soon as they entered, he let go of her as if her touch weighed on him. Gretel smiled immediately as she fixed her hair and walked toward him with obvious intention. “I thought you would never look at me that way again,” she said as she moved closer. Kael remained completely still, watching her. When Gretel tried to kiss him, he raised one hand, stopping her before she could touch him. “Stop.” Gretel’s smile disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared on her lips. “What’s wrong?” Kael looked away for a few seconds before answering. “I’m not going to do anything with you.” Gretel stared at him in disbelief. This was not the same man who had seemed ready to be with her only moments ago. “I thought you would.” He shook his head from side to side. “No. I won’t.” Then he walked toward the door, as if he were trying to escape. “You should get some rest.” And without waiting for a response, he left the room, leaving Gretel completely confused. Kael walked straight to his room. When he opened the door, he found Amaris standing in front of the large window. The moonlight partially illuminated her face, and even though she was trying to hide it, it was obvious she had been crying. Kael closed the door behind him. “What’s wrong with you?” Amaris did not answer immediately. “Why are you crying?” She let out a bitter little laugh without turning around yet. “Isn’t it enough that I have to endure my husband… the most powerful Alpha… sleeping with another woman inside our own home?” Kael stared at her. “You know perfectly well that I can have more than one wife.” Amaris turned toward him immediately. “I didn’t know. I had only heard rumors.” Kael slowly began walking toward her. “They’re not rumors. It’s very true.” Amaris felt like her chest would burst as he kept getting closer. “So don’t be surprised if one day I arrive with a second Luna.” Amaris’s breathing became uneven immediately, and before thinking twice, she raised her hand and slapped him. Kael’s face turned slightly from the impact, then he slowly looked back at her. “Don’t ever touch me again because of your absurd jealousy. Don’t do it again.” Amaris felt tears gathering in her eyes once more. “Do whatever you want with your life. Have all the wives you want.” And without waiting for another response, she quickly left the room. Kael remained motionless for a few seconds, staring at the closed door. Meanwhile, Amaris walked downstairs trying to control everything she was feeling. She went straight into the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water with trembling hands. Then she drank a little before murmuring in frustration, “I can’t believe I ended up married to the coldest and hardest wolf in the world.” “If you’re talking about Kael… then you’re absolutely right.” Amaris startled immediately, quickly turning her head and finding a man leaning against the kitchen entrance. He had dark hair, a relaxed expression, and an amused smile. “He’s also the most boring and strongest wolf I know.” Amaris looked confused. “Who are you?” The man smiled as he grabbed some grapes from the counter. “Velkan. Kael’s younger brother. Only one year younger than him.” Amaris’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. “Kael mentioned that his brother would be arriving soon.” Velkan walked a little closer to her. “And here I am.” Amaris set the glass down on the table and extended her hand politely. “I’m Amaris.” Velkan took her hand kindly. “My brother has a very beautiful and kind wife. Definitely much better than the previous one.” Amaris slightly looked away. “I know very little about her.” Velkan was about to say something else, but then he noticed the visible scratches on Amaris’s skin. His expression changed slightly. “What happened to you?” Amaris lowered her gaze to her injuries. “I slipped down a hill,” she replied, trying to smile a little. “But I’ll be fine in a few days.” “I’m glad to hear that. Besides, I have a feeling you and I are going to get along very well while I’m here.” Amaris let out a small tired laugh. “I’m sure we will.” Then she glanced at the kitchen clock. “But it’s late already. I’ll ask one of the maids to prepare a room for you.” Velkan slightly inclined his head. “Thank you, Luna Amaris.” The two of them left the kitchen at the same time. But just then, Kael slowly descended the stairs. His eyes locked directly onto Velkan… and then onto Amaris. A smile immediately appeared on Velkan’s face as he opened both arms wide. “My brother… I’m finally here.” Kael walked down the rest of the stairs calmly until he stood in front of him. “Welcome.” But before he could say anything else, Velkan hugged him tightly with a small laugh. “Don’t be so boring and hug your brother.” Kael let out a sigh with obvious impatience, though he eventually returned the embrace. “I don’t have time to be some unfunny clown.” Velkan pulled away, still smiling. “You’re still just as bitter.” Kael looked at him seriously. “I have an entire people to protect.” Velkan raised both hands in fake surrender. “Alright, alright. I’m not going to argue with you on the first day.” Then he slightly turned toward Amaris. “By the way… I like your wife.” Kael’s eyes immediately shifted toward him. “What do you mean you like her?” Velkan let out an amused little laugh after noticing his brother’s tone. “Relax, possessive Alpha.” Then he looked back at Amaris. “I’m just saying she seems like a good person, very kind too, and I have a feeling we’re going to get along very well.” Kael kept his gaze fixed on him for a few seconds before speaking again. “Amaris, go get some rest. I’ll take care of my brother.” Amaris looked at both of them for a moment, then turned to Velkan politely. “It was nice meeting you.” Velkan smiled immediately. “The pleasure was mine.” Amaris began walking away, but before going upstairs, she glanced back at him briefly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Definitely,” he replied with an easygoing smile. And without waiting for anything else, Amaris finally headed upstairs while Kael and Velkan remained watching her walk away.
