We Crossed The Line

The night air hit my bare shoulders the second I stepped onto the porch, and I shivered hard, wrapping my arms around myself. The party hummed behind me, muffled through the glass, all those voices and that bass thudding through the floorboards. I should go back inside. I should find Maya, laugh at something stupid, pretend I wasn’t about to suffocate under the weight of wanting something I couldn’t have. My hand was already on the doorknob when I felt it—a brush of fingertips against my wrist, light and quick, gone before I could register the warmth of it. I turned. Ethan stood behind me, his hand already yanked back, shoved deep into his jeans pocket like he was trying to hide the evidence. His jaw was tight, his eyes flickering from my face to the door and back, and his voice came out rough, low, meant only for me. “Wait. Don’t go yet. It’s… it’s cold out here. You shouldn’t go back in a hurry.” I stared at him. The porch light caught the sharp line of his collarbone, the hollow of his throat, the way his ears were turning pink at the tips. He was wearing nothing but a thin t-shirt, and the breeze pulled at the fabric, and I could see the goosebumps rising on his arms. “You’re shivering,” he said, and he was already shrugging off his denim jacket, pulling it free, holding it out to me with his eyes fixed somewhere over my shoulder. “Here. Take it.” I took it. My fingers brushed his, and I felt the heat still trapped in the fabric, the ghost of his body, the smell of cigarette smoke and something clean and sharp underneath. I pulled it on, and it swallowed me, the sleeves falling past my wrists, the hem hanging low on my thighs. He looked at me then. A long second. His breath caught, and he looked away fast, shoving his hands back into his pockets like he was trying to stop himself from reaching for me again. The crickets were loud in the backyard. The noise from inside the house was a dull roar, contained and distant. The two of us stood on the porch, and the silence stretched between us, thick and warm and full of everything we hadn’t said for years. I stepped closer. He didn’t move back. My shoulder brushed his arm, and I felt him go rigid beside me, his whole body tensing like he was bracing for impact. I didn’t pull away. He turned his head to look at me. His eyes were dark, catching the faint porch light, and I could see the war in them—wanting to stay, wanting to run, both tangled so tight they were almost the same thing. His voice dropped, low and rough, almost lost to the wind. “You shouldn’t be out here with me. Not like this. Those guys… they say stupid s**t, but it’s not—” I pushed up on my toes and kissed him. It was quick. Soft. The corner of his mouth, barely a second. I pulled back immediately, my heart slamming against my ribs so hard I could hear it in my ears, and I watched his eyes go wide, his mouth falling open, his whole body going still like he’d been turned to stone. The silence stretched. Thick. Warm. Neither of us moving. And then I ran. The door rattled when I yanked it open, slipping inside before he could recover, before I could see what he was going to say. I didn’t look back. My cheeks were on fire. My hands were shaking. I took the stairs two at a time, my heart pounding so loud I couldn’t hear anything else, and I found Maya’s room, and I sat on the edge of the bed, and I stared at the frayed edge of the comforter, and I couldn’t breathe. Maya saw my face. Maya saw the jacket. Maya grinned into her drink and said nothing. Ten minutes passed. Or an hour. I couldn’t tell. I was still sitting there, still shaking, still wearing his jacket, when I heard heavy footsteps on the stairs. My heart lurched into my throat. The footsteps stopped right outside the door. A soft knock. Maya looked at me. Raised her eyebrows. Nodded toward the door. “Don’t just sit there,” she said. “He’s not gonna leave until he talks to you. I’ll go make sure the boys don’t come up.” I stood up. My legs were unsteady. The denim jacket was soft under my palms, still carrying his scent, still warm. I crossed the room in three steps, twisted the doorknob, and pulled the door open just enough to peek out. He was standing in the hallway, one hand braced against the wall, his hair a mess from running his fingers through it. He straightened up the second he saw me, his eyes finding mine, and the party noise from downstairs faded into a distant hum. The hallway between us went quiet. He opened his mouth. Closed it. Swallowed hard. His gaze flickered from my face down to the jacket, then back up, and he lifted one hand to rub the back of his neck, his cheeks turning pink. “Can we talk about what happened out there? I just… I need to know.” I leaned against the doorframe, my fingers curling into the denim of the jacket. “Oh,” I said, and my cheeks flushed so hot I could feel the heat radiating off them. He stepped closer. His knuckles brushed my cheek, light and tentative, and then he pulled back like he was afraid I’d flinch. His breath was warm against my forehead when he leaned in, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. “Did you mean that kiss? Or was it just… just a stupid joke to tease me?” I ducked my head, staring at the frayed edge of the jacket cuff. I couldn’t look at him. If I looked at him, I would lose my nerve. I would run again. I would keep running for the rest of my life. I lifted my chin. Met his eyes. My voice came out small, but steady. “It wasn’t a joke.” He breathed out. A long, slow exhale, like he’d been holding his breath for years and was only just now letting it go. His hand came up to cup my cheek, his palm warm against my burning skin, and he didn’t pull away this time. He leaned in closer, his forehead resting against mine, his voice rough and thick. “You have no idea how long I’ve been wanting to hear you say that. Even if it’s wrong. Even if I shouldn’t.” My breath caught. His thumb brushed soft over my jaw, and I tilted my chin up, and I pressed my mouth to his. He kissed me back like he was drowning. Deep and hungry, one hand fisting in the back of the jacket, pulling me against him, his body hard and warm and shaking. I could taste the cigarette on his lips, the faint salt of his skin, and I pulled him closer, my fingers tangling in his hair, my back hitting the doorframe. He broke the kiss only to catch his breath, his forehead still pressed to mine, his chest heaving. He kissed the corner of my mouth. My jaw. The spot just below my ear. His voice was wrecked when he whispered against my skin. “We shouldn’t do this here. Maya could walk back any second. But god, I don’t want to stop touching you.” I grabbed his hand. Tangled my fingers through his. Pulled him down the hallway, past the locked bathroom door, past the framed photo of Maya’s family, to the guest room. I fumbled the key off the hook, yanked the door open, and pulled him inside. The door clicked shut behind us. He pressed me back against the wood immediately, kissing me hard, his hands roaming slow over my waist under his jacket. His fingers found the bare skin of my hip, where my dress had ridden up, and he paused. Pulled back. Looked at me. His thumb brushed over my cheek. His breath was ragged. He waited, his whole body tight with want and the quiet fear he’d been carrying for years, and he waited for me to say stop. I grabbed his wrist and pressed his hand further up my thigh. I tilted my chin up and kissed him again. He groaned against my mouth, and I felt his heart hammering against my chest, frantic and loud, matching mine. My fingers fumbled with the button of his jeans, and he kissed me deeper, one hand sliding to the zipper at the back of my dress, pulling it down slow. Maya’s voice floated up from the bottom of the stairs, calling his name. Neither of us stopped. He clicked the lock on the door. Twice. His hands moved to the straps of my dress, pushing them down my shoulders, and he pressed his mouth to the exposed curve of my neck, kissing his way down to my collarbone. Maya’s footsteps got closer. Paused outside the door. We both went still, holding our breath, and then Maya huffed and walked back toward her own room, muttering about him hiding somewhere to smoke. The footsteps faded. He pressed his mouth back to mine. His hand slid under the fallen fabric of my dress, cupping my breast, his thumb brushing slow over my n****e, and I gasped into the kiss. He pulled the dress off my shoulders, let it pool on the floor at my feet, and his hands roamed over every inch of my newly exposed skin like he was memorizing me, like he was afraid this was a dream he’d wake up from. I fumbled with the hem of his shirt, yanked it up over his head, dropped it next to my dress. My palms slid flat over the warm muscle of his chest, and he kissed down my neck, slow and hungry, one hand slipping between my legs to stroke me through the thin fabric of my underwear. I moaned soft. My fingers tightened in his hair. He hooked his fingers in the waistband of my underwear and pulled them down slow, kneeling in front of me as he went. His warm breath fanned over my inner thigh, and he looked up at me through his dark eyelashes, waiting. I nodded. He pressed his mouth to me, slow and open-mouthed, right where I needed him most, and my knees went weak. My hand tightened in his hair, a sharp little gasp slipping past my lips when he licked me deeper, his fingers digging into my hips to hold me open for him. The quiet room filled with the soft sound of my moans and his quiet groans, and I could feel the tension building low in my belly, fast and hot, and I tugged at his hair to warn him. He pulled me forward by the hips, hooking my leg over his shoulder, his arm wrapping tight around my thigh to hold me steady. I could feel his breath hitching against my skin, the rough scrape of his stubble, and he worked me faster, his tongue pressing hard against me until I came apart, crying out his name into the quiet room. I sagged back against the door, my legs shaking too hard to hold me up. He stood up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, his dark eyes glazed with want. He wrapped one arm around my waist to hold me steady, kissing me hard so I could taste myself on his tongue, and I could feel how hard he was, pressing against my hip through his jeans. I fumbled his jeans open. Pushed them down. My hand wrapped around him, and he groaned into my mouth, his hips jerking forward into my touch. He pulled my hand away gently, pressing me back against the door, his breath coming fast against my neck as he lined himself up. He paused. Looked at me. His voice was rough with need. “Tell me you want this. Tell me you want me.” I tilted my chin up. Kissed him soft. My nails scraped lightly down his bare chest, and I whispered the words right against his mouth, clear and sure. “I’ve wanted you since I was sixteen, Ethan. Of course I want you. I want you so bad.” He groaned. Pressed forward slow. Stretched me open inch by inch, pausing every few seconds to let me adjust, kissing my neck and whispering my name like it was a prayer he’d been too scared to say out loud until now. When he was fully inside me, he stayed still for a long minute. Holding me close. His forehead pressed to mine. Our breath mingling. He pulled back just enough to look at me, his thumb brushing my cheek, and then he started moving. Slow. Deep. Each thrust making me gasp and wrap my legs tighter around his waist. The door creaked under us, quiet and steady. The party hummed downstairs, distant and oblivious. I could hear laughter, glasses clinking, someone shouting at the TV. And all I could focus on was the heat building between us, the rough drag of him inside me, the way he whispered how good I felt, how pretty I looked falling apart for him against the door. His hand slid between my legs again, stroking fast circles, and I could feel the second orgasm building, hotter and deeper than the first. I came apart with a soft cry of his name, my nails digging into his shoulders, and he f****d me through it, his thrusts getting faster and messier, his breath coming in rough groans against my neck. He pulled out at the last second. Spilled over my thigh with a low groan of my name. His body pressed against mine, holding me up while we both trembled, coming down. The quiet settled around us. The only sound was our breathing, ragged and slow, and the distant, muffled noise of the party that had nothing to do with us. He reached for the clean folded towel on the dresser. Wiped me down gentle. Helped me step back into my underwear. Picked my dress up off the floor and held it out for me with a soft, dazed smile I hadn’t ever seen on his face before. I took the dress. My fingers brushed his. I couldn’t stop smiling either, my cheeks sore from how wide I was grinning. He pulled his t-shirt back on. Ran a hand through his messy hair. Reached for my hand and tangled his fingers through mine, his thumb brushing soft over my knuckles. The lock clicked when he turned it. He paused. Leaned in. Kissed me one more slow, soft time before he pulled back. The door opened. The noise of the party flooded back in. And we stepped out together, his hand still in mine, the jacket still warm on my shoulders. We walked down together. Hand in Hand. We weren't going to hide anything anymore. •°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°°•°°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•° We took a ride to his apartment..
