Chapter Two — Tangled Loyalties

1610 Words
AERIS POV The scent of gunpowder clung to her skin. Even after the cold shower, even after scrubbing until her hands turned red, Aeris could still feel the weight of the trigger she didn’t pull. Agent Marcos. Her old partner. Almost executed because of her. She stared at her reflection in the mirror—eyes that once looked certain, now hollowed by hesitation. The mission had rules. Distance. Objectivity. And she was breaking every single one of them. She hadn’t just disobeyed orders tonight. She’d chosen instinct over duty. And worse… she trusted Luca. “Stupid,” she whispered to herself. “You’re getting sloppy.” A knock broke her thoughts. Before she could reach for the gun under the pillow, the door creaked open. And there she was. A woman in her late twenties, sleek brown hair pinned into a twist, wearing a navy blazer and heels too sharp to be ornamental. Eva Moretti. Luca’s cousin. “I brought you tea,” she said casually, placing a cup on the dresser. “Chamomile. You looked… unwell tonight.” “Did I?” Aeris didn’t move. Didn’t smile. Didn’t blink. Eva’s grin was razor-thin. “Relax. I’m not here to interrogate you. Yet.” Aeris met her eyes. “Then why are you here?” “To get a read on the woman who’s apparently marrying my cousin. You’ve made quite the entrance into our world, Miss Vargas.” She said it like she didn’t believe the name for a second. Aeris finally spoke, cold and precise. “And you’ve made it clear you’re the family spy.” Eva laughed. “Touché. But don’t flatter me. If I were a real threat, you’d already be dead.” A pause. “I hope you know,” Eva continued, pouring herself tea, “Luca doesn’t trust people easily. Which means either he knows who you are… or he’s falling for you.” Aeris stiffened. “And which one would be more dangerous?” Eva took a sip. “Both.” ------------------------------- LUCA’S POV The blade in his hand was ceremonial—sharp, clean, engraved with the Moretti family seal—but tonight, it felt heavier than usual. Luca stared at it, sitting alone in the inner chamber of the Moretti estate. His uncle’s test had gone too far. He knew Aeris wasn’t who she claimed to be. That much was obvious now. But he couldn’t let her be exposed. Not yet. Not when her lies were so tightly woven into his truth. The warehouse test… she could’ve let Marcos die. That would’ve been the smart move. But she hadn’t. She’d played it bold. Reckless. Real. And that made her even more dangerous. “You’re losing focus,” came a voice from the shadows. Silas Cruz stepped into the candlelight, dressed in gray, his silver rings clicking against a whiskey glass. Former gunrunner. Now an “independent broker.” Charming. Treacherous. And, inconveniently, a friend. “I’m watching you unravel,” Silas said lightly. “Is it the girl? Or the pressure of becoming the new king?” Luca didn’t look at him. “You weren’t invited.” “And yet I’m here. Because I bring news.” Luca raised an eyebrow. “About?” Silas handed him a sealed folder. Inside were photos. Documents. Surveillance stills. A name. Reyes. Aeris’s handler. Luca flipped through the pages in silence until Silas spoke again. “She’s one of them.” “I know.” “But you didn’t tell your father.” “I didn’t tell you either. And I’m still listening.” Silas tilted his head. “You still think you can use her?” “No,” Luca said. “I think I can protect her.” “From what?” Luca met his eyes. “From everyone.” ------------------------------- AERIS POV The moonlight stretched across the balcony like a spotlight on her guilt. Aeris leaned against the railing, the chamomile tea untouched on the table beside her. Eva had left an hour ago, satisfied—or maybe unsatisfied—with their exchange. It didn’t matter. The Morettis were circling. And she was running out of time. She dialed the burner phone again. No response. Not even static. It was like Reyes had gone dark on purpose. Or worse, someone had silenced him. She was about to power off the device when the screen lit up: Unknown Number. She answered. Silence. Then: “He’s onto you.” Aeris froze. “Reyes?” No reply. “Where are you?” she hissed. “You burned me, didn’t you? You left me in the lion’s den without an exit.” The voice came again, scrambled. “You were never supposed to get this deep.” The line went dead. Aeris stared at the phone, rage boiling under her skin. She was a weapon—but now she is also a pawn. No backup. No handler. Just a man she couldn’t kill and couldn’t stop wanting. Behind her, the glass door slid open. She spun—gun drawn. Luca raised his hands slowly. “Easy.” She lowered the weapon but didn’t relax. “You shouldn’t sneak up on me.” “I wasn’t sneaking. You were too distracted.” He stepped beside her, looking out at the view. “That was your handler, wasn’t it?” She froze. He didn’t even look at her as he said it. “I traced the signal. It bounced off five towers, but I know Reyes’s voice.” “You listened in?” “I listen to everything.” Aeris looked away. “He’s hiding something. They’ve left me here.” “I know,” Luca said. “That’s why I want to offer you a deal.” She laughed bitterly. “A deal?” “Stay. As my fiancée. Not for appearances. For real.” She turned to him, stunned. “You want me to actually marry you?” He stepped closer, eyes burning. “You’re already mine, Aeris. You just haven’t accepted it yet.” ------------------------------- LUCA’S POV He’d never felt this reckless. Luca Moretti had outmaneuvered assassins, rivals, and his own father’s wrath. But now, standing inches from a woman trained to destroy him, he was doing something truly suicidal. He was letting her in. She didn’t reply. Just stared at him like he’d spoken a language she didn’t know. “I’m not asking you to betray your agency,” he said. “I’m asking you to pick a side.” Her voice came slow. “You think I can forget what you are? What you’ve done?” “No,” he admitted. “But I think you can understand it.” He reached for her hand, slowly, deliberately. She didn’t pull away. “I’ll give you three days,” Luca said. “Three days to decide.” “And if I say no?” His smile was tragic. “Then I’ll still protect you. But you’ll never be safe again.” ------------------------------- AERIS POV She didn’t sleep that night. Instead, she watched the sky shift from obsidian to silver, her thoughts louder than the city beneath. The mission was over. Her objective had twisted into something unrecognizable. But deep inside, behind the agent’s walls, something whispered: Stay. Not because of strategy. Not because of survival. But because of him. ------------------------------- Three Days Later — The Garden The Moretti estate was holding another event—smaller this time. A garden brunch for allies, influencers, and family. Aeris wore white lace and silver heels—too formal for her taste, too exposed. But she walked beside Luca like she belonged. Eva approached with a glass of orange wine. “You’ve made your decision, haven’t you?” Aeris raised an eyebrow. “You always this nosy?” “I run background checks for fun.” They both smiled. But Eva’s eyes were careful. Intelligent. She wasn’t just the mafia’s PR woman—she was its firewall. Then came Silas Cruz, all charm and swagger, clapping Luca on the back and handing the Aeris a card. “Pleasure to meet the infamous bride,” he said. “I’ve heard… delicious things.” “Silas runs guns,” Eva muttered beside her. “And rumors.” Aeris kept her tone light. “And what rumor brought you here?” He winked. “The kind that ends with a crown on your head. Or a knife in your back.” ------------------------------- LUCA POV — LATER THAT NIGHT He found her in the east wing study, back turned, reading something she shouldn’t be reading. A classified Moretti file. She closed it before he could say anything. “I had to know what I was agreeing to,” she said simply. “And?” “I still don’t trust you.” Luca stepped closer. “Good. Don’t trust me. But fight with me.” “You want me to become your queen,” she said. “But I’m already someone else’s soldier.” He leaned in. “Then defect.” ------------------------------- AERIS POV — THE CHOICE She stood in front of the council that evening, flanked by Luca and Eva. Silas was watching from a corner, his smile unreadable. “I am not who you thought I was,” Aeris said, voice clear. “I came here under orders. But I’m no longer following them.” Gasps. Tension. Don Silvano leaned forward. “And what do you follow now, Elena Vargas?” She lifted her chin. “My own path. With your son.” Luca’s hand closed around hers. And for the first time, she wasn’t pretending. --- END OF CHAPTER TWO
