The Silence That Followed Her

585 Words
The message on the screen didn’t change. STATUS: MISSING But Kael Voss didn’t blink. He just stared. Still. Like if he looked long enough, the truth would rearrange itself. The room around him stayed dark, lit only by the soft glow of monitors and city lights bleeding through the glass walls of his office. Someone spoke behind him. “Sir… the school confirmed it. She didn’t go home. No phone signal. No bank activity. Nothing.” Kael didn’t respond. Another pause. Then— “…Her friends are panicking.” Silence. Kael finally leaned back slowly in his chair. Not angry. Not surprised. Just… thinking. That was what made it worse. Because Kael Voss didn’t think about people who meant nothing. ⸻ He reached for his phone. Unlocked it. Scrolled. Amara. One chat. Unread. The last message still sitting there like it was waiting for her to come back and answer it. He stared at it for a long time. Then his thumb moved. Paused. And he sent a message. Kael: “Where are you?” The send icon turned blue. Delivered. No reply. ⸻ Outside his office, the city moved like nothing had happened. But inside him… Something unfamiliar shifted. Not guilt. Not regret. Something quieter. More annoying. Unfinished. ⸻ At the same time, miles away, Amara stood in front of a small mirror in a dim, unfamiliar room. No school uniform. No noise. No crowd. Just silence. Her reflection looked the same… but not really. Her eyes didn’t. She touched the edge of the mirror lightly. Then whispered to herself, “…So this is what it feels like.” A knock came at the door. Once. Then again. Amara didn’t move. A woman’s voice followed. “You have a place here now. But don’t expect kindness. You earn everything from this point forward.” A pause. Then the lock clicked. The door opened slightly. And a file was dropped onto the bed. Amara turned slowly. The woman didn’t look at her long. Just said: “Start from tomorrow. Don’t embarrass me.” Then left. The door closed again. ⸻ Amara looked at the file. Opened it. Inside: PART-TIME STAFF POSITION — SERVICE INDUSTRY Her fingers tightened slightly. For a moment… something flickered in her eyes. Pain. Or memory. Or both. But it disappeared quickly. She closed the file. And smiled again. Small. Controlled. Different from the one she used in the hall. This one wasn’t breaking. This one was learning. ⸻ Back at Voss Empire Towers… Kael was still staring at her last seen status. Then suddenly— His assistant spoke again. “Sir… there’s something else.” Kael didn’t look up. “What.” A pause. Then: “We found something strange in her records…” Kael finally turned slightly. Just enough. “Speak.” The assistant hesitated. “…She didn’t just disappear.” Kael’s eyes narrowed a fraction. The room went colder. Then the assistant continued: “Someone helped her leave the system completely.” Silence. Kael stood up slowly. The chair rolled back without sound. And for the first time that night… His expression changed. Not anger. Not curiosity. Something sharper. Interest. ⸻ “Find her,” Kael said quietly. No emotion in his voice. But the order hit like a warning. “Even if I have to tear the system apart.” ⸻ Far away, Amara closed her eyes in the dim room. And for reasons she didn’t understand yet… She felt like someone had just started looking for her.
