THE GAME THEY CAN’T

397 Words
Avoiding him didn’t work. It made everything worse. TOO AWARE Every shift— She felt him. Every pass— She anticipated him. Every second— She knew exactly where he was. And he knew exactly where she was. Like they were locked into the same rhythm— Whether they wanted to be or not. THE PLAY It happened fast. Breakaway. Two-on-one. Lena pushed forward hard. Marcus beside her. Defense closing in. And then— Ethan. Of course. He moved to block Marcus— Leaving Lena the lane. A mistake. Or a choice. She didn’t hesitate. Shot. Goal. The crowd erupted. But Lena didn’t celebrate. Not really. Because she knew— He let that happen. THE REALIZATION “You could’ve stopped that.” She said it the second she passed him. He didn’t deny it. “I could have.” Her chest tightened. “Why didn’t you?” A beat. Because this answer— Mattered more than it should. “I wanted to see if you’d take it.” Her pulse spiked. “That’s not how this works.” “It is now.” That— That was dangerous. Because now— He wasn’t just part of the game. He was changing it. LOSING THE EDGE Lena pushed harder after that. Too hard. Trying to prove something— To him. To herself. And it showed. Missed timing. Slower reactions. “Focus!” Coach snapped from the bench. She forced herself to reset. To breathe. To pull everything back under control. But it wasn’t the same. Because now— Control had something competing with it. Something stronger. AFTER THE GAME They didn’t mean to end up alone. But somehow— They did. Empty hallway. Quiet. Too quiet. “You’re messing with my game,” Lena said. No accusation. Just truth. Ethan leaned against the wall, watching her. “You’re letting me.” Her jaw tightened. “I don’t let anything happen.” A step closer. “Then why is this?” Silence. Because this— Didn’t follow her rules. Didn’t fit into anything she understood. THE PULL AGAIN “You should stay away,” she said. Her voice quieter now. Less certain. Ethan didn’t move. “You first.” Her breath caught. Because that— Wasn’t a refusal. That was a challenge. And she didn’t walk away. Didn’t step back. Didn’t break the distance. Because she couldn’t. Not anymore.
