THE SPACE BETWEEN THEM

512 Words
They stopped. Technically. No late practices together. No quiet conversations. No lingering touches. No kisses. But distance— Didn’t feel like distance. It felt like absence. And absence— Was louder. SILENCE THAT HURTS Lena focused harder than ever. She trained. She pushed. She played like nothing existed outside the ice. And it worked. Her performance sharpened again. Cleaner plays. Better timing. Control. She got it back. Exactly what she wanted. So why— Did it feel worse? THE GAME WITHOUT HIM She noticed it immediately. Not his presence— His absence. No voice at her shoulder. No quiet corrections. No awareness pulling at her focus. She should’ve felt relief. Instead— She felt off balance. Like something essential had been removed. And she didn’t know how to compensate. HIM—AT A DISTANCE Ethan didn’t look at her anymore. Not directly. Not like before. He played the same. Moved the same. But something in him— Had shut down. And Lena felt it. Every second of it. Because whatever this was— It wasn’t just affecting her. CRACKS IN CONTROL “Good game,” Marcus said as they left the ice. She nodded. It had been good. Statistically. Technically. Perfect. But it didn’t feel like it. “You don’t look like you won,” he added. “I did.” “Yeah,” he said slowly. “But something’s off.” She didn’t respond. Because she couldn’t explain it. Didn’t want to. Didn’t want to admit— That winning didn’t feel the same anymore. THE MOMENT SHE BREAKS It happened after practice. Of course it did. Empty hallway. Quiet. Too quiet. She saw him at the far end. And this time— He turned to leave. Before she could pretend she didn’t see him. Before she could decide not to follow. “Ethan.” The name left her before she could stop it. He paused. Didn’t turn right away. Then slowly— He did. And that distance between them— Felt unbearable. THE TRUTH THEY CAN’T HOLD BACK “You’re avoiding me,” she said. His expression didn’t change. “You said to stop.” Her chest tightened. “I didn’t mean—” She stopped. Because she didn’t know how to finish that sentence. Didn’t know what she meant anymore. “That’s exactly what you meant,” he said. Calm. Too calm. Like he’d already accepted it. Like he’d already let it go. And that— That hurt. More than it should have. SHE CAN’T LET GO “This isn’t working,” she said. “No,” he agreed. Silence. Because now— They were both saying it. Acknowledging it. And still— Nothing was changing. “Then why does it feel worse?” she asked quietly. That— That broke something. Because that question wasn’t controlled. It wasn’t guarded. It was real. And Ethan felt it. “I don’t know,” he said. A step closer. “Maybe because it matters.” Her breath caught. Because there it was again. That word. That truth. That thing she couldn’t control.
