I stood there for a few seconds, staring at my phone.
Good.
That was all Cameron had to say.
I walked back to my bed and sat down.
I looked at the flash drive on my desk.
Then at my phone.
Then back at the flash drive.
None of this made sense.
First Evan called me.
Then some random number told me not to look outside.
Then I found a flash drive hidden inside Evan's jacket.
And now Cameron was telling me to lock my door without explaining why.
I picked up my phone.
Me: Cameron?
The typing bubble appeared.
Cameron: Yeah?
Me: What's going on?
A few seconds passed.
Cameron: I told you. Just trust me.
I stared at the message.
That wasn't an answer.
Me: That's not an explanation.
He didn't reply.
I waited.
Nothing.
I was about to put my phone down when it buzzed again.
Cameron: Did Evan leave you anything?
I froze.
I looked at the flash drive.
How did he know?
I typed:
Me: Why would you ask that?
He took a while to answer.
Cameron: Just answer me.
I looked at the flash drive again.
I didn't know if I should tell him.
Evan had specifically told me to ask Cameron.
But something about this whole thing felt wrong.
I typed:
Me: Maybe.
His reply came almost immediately.
Cameron: Riley.
Just my name.
Nothing else.
I frowned.
Me: What?
The typing bubble appeared.
Then:
Cameron: Whatever he left you, don't show anyone.
My stomach tightened.
Me: Why?
No answer.
Me: Cameron?
Nothing.
I waited another minute.
Still nothing.
I put my phone down.
There was something he wasn't telling me.
I knew it.
And somehow, I had a feeling it had something to do with Evan.
I looked at the flash drive.
Three videos.
Three files.
And apparently something important enough for Evan to hide inside his jacket.
I reached for my laptop.
Before I could open it, my phone buzzed again.
Unknown number.
My hand stopped.
I didn't want to look.
I already knew I should probably ignore it.
But I picked up my phone anyway.
One message.
You shouldn't have contacted Cameron.
My stomach dropped.
How did they know?
I typed:
How do you know that?
The message showed as delivered.
No reply.
I waited.
Nothing.
Then another message appeared.
Stay away from him.
I stared at the screen.
My hands started shaking again.
Someone knew.
Someone was watching what I was doing.
And suddenly, locking my door didn't feel like enough.
