THE POCKET

‎ ‎My fingers touched something. ‎ ‎I froze. ‎ ‎For a second, I didn't want to pull it out. ‎ ‎What if it was nothing? ‎ ‎What if the person texting me was just messing with me? ‎ ‎What if— ‎ ‎I shook my head. ‎ ‎"Just do it, Riley. You got this, Riley," I told myself. ‎ ‎I pulled it out. ‎ ‎It was a small black flash drive. ‎ ‎I stared at it. ‎ ‎What the hell was inside this thing? ‎ ‎I turned it over in my hand. ‎ ‎There was a tiny piece of white tape stuck to it. ‎ ‎Written on the tape were two words. ‎ ‎For Riley. ‎ ‎My stomach dropped. ‎ ‎"No way." ‎ ‎I sat down on the floor. ‎ ‎Why would Evan have a flash drive with my name on it? ‎ ‎And why was it hidden inside his jacket? ‎ ‎I looked at my phone. ‎ ‎The unknown number was still there. ‎ ‎I wanted to text them. ‎ ‎I wanted to ask how they knew about the jacket. ‎ ‎I wanted to ask if Evan had given it to them. ‎ ‎But I didn't. ‎ ‎I looked at the flash drive again. ‎ ‎There was only one way to find out what was inside. ‎ ‎I grabbed my laptop from my desk and brought it over to my bed. ‎ ‎My hands were still shaking a little. ‎ ‎I plugged the flash drive in. ‎ ‎A folder appeared. ‎ ‎I clicked on it. ‎ ‎There were three files. ‎ ‎01 ‎ ‎02 ‎ ‎03 ‎ ‎I stared at them for a second. ‎ ‎"Okay..." ‎ ‎I clicked the first one. ‎ ‎It was a video. ‎ ‎The screen went black. ‎ ‎Then Evan appeared. ‎ ‎I stopped breathing. ‎ ‎He was sitting in what looked like his bedroom. ‎ ‎His hair was messy. ‎ ‎He was wearing the same black hoodie he'd worn almost every day. ‎ ‎For a few seconds, he didn't say anything. ‎ ‎He just looked at the camera. ‎ ‎Then he sighed. ‎ ‎"If you're watching this, something went wrong." ‎ ‎My eyes started burning. ‎ ‎I leaned closer to the screen. ‎ ‎Evan looked nervous. ‎ ‎I'd never seen him like that before. ‎ ‎He looked behind him before speaking again. ‎ ‎"I don't have a lot of time, so I'm just going to say this." ‎ ‎He paused. ‎ ‎"Riley, you can't trust everyone around you." ‎ ‎I frowned. ‎ ‎"What does that even mean?" ‎ ‎Obviously, he couldn't hear me. ‎ ‎He looked down for a second. ‎ ‎Then back at the camera. ‎ ‎"There are things I found out that I shouldn't have." ‎ ‎My heart started beating faster. ‎ ‎"I thought I could handle it myself." ‎ ‎He laughed quietly. ‎ ‎"I was wrong." ‎ ‎The video suddenly froze. ‎ ‎I stared at the screen. ‎ ‎"Are you serious?" ‎ ‎I waited a few seconds. ‎ ‎Nothing. ‎ ‎"Come on." ‎ ‎I clicked the screen. ‎ ‎Nothing happened. ‎ ‎I clicked around the video. ‎ ‎Still nothing. ‎ ‎I tried playing it again. ‎ ‎Nothing. ‎ ‎"Why did you have to pause right there?" ‎ ‎I leaned back and rubbed my face. ‎ ‎What was he about to say? ‎ ‎What did he find out? ‎ ‎And why did he make these videos? ‎ ‎I tried clicking around again, hoping it would somehow start working. ‎ ‎It didn't. ‎ ‎I sighed. ‎ ‎Fine. ‎ ‎Maybe the next video would tell me something. ‎ ‎I clicked on 02. ‎ ‎The screen went black. ‎ ‎I waited. ‎ ‎Then the video started. ‎ ‎Evan appeared again. ‎ ‎But this time, he wasn't in his bedroom. ‎ ‎He was sitting inside a car. ‎ ‎And he looked terrified. ‎ ‎My stomach dropped. ‎ ‎"What happened to you?" ‎
