I didn't move.
"What do you mean they know where we are?"
Cameron grabbed his jacket.
"Just come on."
"You're not answering me."
"I know."
"Cameron."
He looked at me.
"Please, Riley. Just trust me."
I hated hearing those words.
But the look on his face made me stand up.
I grabbed my bag and followed him.
We walked out of the diner.
The afternoon air was cold.
I looked around the parking lot.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Cars.
People.
The traffic on the road.
Everything looked normal.
"Where are we going?"
"My car."
"Then what?"
"I'll take you home."
I stopped walking.
"No."
He turned around.
"No?"
"I don't want to go home."
His face changed.
"Why?"
"Because whoever is doing this knows where I live."
He didn't argue.
He just nodded.
"Okay."
He looked around the parking lot again.
"Then you're coming with me."
"Where?"
"I'll figure it out."
I stared at him.
"That's not exactly reassuring."
"I know."
We reached his car.
He unlocked it.
I was about to get in when I noticed something.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
I froze.
"Cameron."
He turned.
"What?"
I pointed toward it.
"That car."
He looked at the SUV.
For a second, he didn't say anything.
Then his expression changed.
"Get in."
My stomach dropped.
"Is that—"
"Riley. Get in the car."
I got in.
He shut the door and walked around to the driver's side.
The second he started the engine, I looked through the window.
The SUV was still there.
The windows were dark.
I couldn't see anyone inside.
Cameron pulled out of the parking lot.
I kept looking behind us.
The SUV didn't move.
At least, not at first.
We drove for a few minutes.
Neither of us spoke.
Then I noticed headlights in the rearview mirror.
A black SUV.
My stomach dropped.
"Cameron."
"I see it."
"Is it following us?"
"I don't know."
He turned onto another street.
The SUV turned too.
I grabbed the seat.
"Okay. That's definitely following us."
Cameron didn't answer.
He drove faster.
The SUV stayed behind us.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere they won't expect."
"Where?"
"You'll see."
I looked back again.
The SUV was getting closer.
"Cameron, it's getting closer."
"I know."
He suddenly turned onto a narrow road.
The SUV continued straight.
I watched it disappear behind us.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, Cameron slowed down.
I let out a breath.
"Did we lose them?"
"I think so."
I looked at him.
"You think?"
He didn't answer.
A few seconds later, he pulled into a small parking lot beside an old building.
I looked out the window.
"What is this place?"
Cameron turned off the engine.
"Somewhere Evan used to go."
I stared at him.
"Evan?"
He nodded.
"Before he died."
My heart started pounding again.
"What did he do here?"
Cameron looked at me.
"That's what we're going to find out."
