Chapter 3When she had climbed into bed, Sona lay in the darkness thinking about the evening and feeling that it was one of the strangest she had ever spent. The shock when first the Duke had commanded her not to see Torquil again was overshadowed by the appearance of the bride-to-be and her sudden sympathy for the Marquis. She had felt before that she almost hated him for his rudeness to her and for everything that Torquil had told her about him. Now she knew that she would not wish her worst enemy to have to marry somebody as unattractive as Lady Jean. All through dinner the bride-to-be sat looking dull and rather sulky and making little effort to respond to the Duke.
