Skye ran to shut the windows of the flat as the rain came teeming down, beating against the panes and soaking the net curtains as the gusts of wind blew them to and fro. She stood looking out on to the empty courtyard. She felt tired and dispirited. This interminable waiting was now beginning to tell on her nerves. And it was for Hector that she worried the most. She knew that he hated the position that they had put themselves in. Every day that they remained together, with their love unblessed, he felt that he was insulting her. No amount of argument and nothing she could say could in any way alter his opinion, which was based firmly on his highest principles. Although neither would admit it, the barrier that this raised between them was beginning in some way to hurt their happiness
