Norman was dressed in a quarter of an hour. He hurried downstairs to the library where he rang the bell. When the butler came, he questioned him about Carlotta’s movements and only to learn no more than Ella had already told him. Carlotta had left the house at half-past seven with Billy and with a great deal of luggage. She had ordered the motor car to be brought round and the chauffeur was waiting for her. But, when she came out of the house, she dismissed him and then drove off herself. The servants were obviously very curious and Norman knew that they were speculating among themselves as to what had happened.
