Shawn’s crying now as Dad shoves him closer to the glass. Snot, spit, and tears stream from his face. Dad picks up the glass himself and with his other hand behind Shawn’s head forces the two together. Shawn’s aimless, heavy arms flail. The liquid spills over the edge of the glass drip-by-drip until Shawn finally tastes it on his tongue and the smell rips through him, burning his eyes and his throat and Dad pours it all into his gasping mouth as he chokes on more sobs, the harsh liquid coming out of his nose and erupting a flash of acid through his sinuses, eyes, and ears, and when he swallows what he can of the liquid he looks up into Dad’s face and sees there in the grown man’s eyes budding tears of his own.
