A letter came from Doug today. He offered me everything I ever wanted on a plate, and I saw right through the trap at the center. Will keep it as a reminder. Doug’s letter is tucked in between the following pages. His neat, elegant handwriting travels in straight lines across the unlined paper. Paradise Voyages’ logo, a stylized compass on a cloud, is printed in green at the top. My Rose, I have tried to visit you, but have been rebuffed each time. Strange that we both live in this small city, and I’ve never seen you or the children in person. Gloria and I have parted in all ways except on paper. She will never give me a divorce (as Catholic as Sylvia Tietjens, and just as intractable), but she accepts reality. I persuaded her to move to her mother’s house while I sold the condominium.
