The engine of the sports car roared again as Jaxson pulled back into the VIP courtyard of Saint Jude’s. He didn't park in a designated space he brought the vehicle to a sudden stop right in front of the main glass doors, completely blocking the entrance lane.
"Jaxson, wait," I said, my hand instinctively grasping his forearm as he reached for the door handle. "We can't just walk into Principal Sterling's office like this. Julian's father is on the school board. If we make a scene, they'll turn this around on us."
Jaxson slowly turned his head to look at me. His gray eyes were unblinking, devoid of hesitation or doubt.
"Julian used my name, my locker key, and my ice time to set you up," Jaxson murmured, placing his palm over my hand on his arm, his fingers wrapping firmly around mine. "In this school, Elena, you don't play defense. You crush the threat before it can stand up."
He stepped out of the car, pulled open my door, and took my wrist. My heart was beating like a trapped bird against my ribs as he led me straight through the grand double doors of the administration wing.
Students in the hallway stopped in their tracks. Whispers rippled through the corridors as they watched Jaxson Vance—the school's untouchable heir—walking side by side with the scholarship girl, his fingers tightly laced through mine, with his white-gold varsity ring gleaming on my thumb.
We reached the heavy oak doors of Principal Sterling’s suite. Without knocking, Jaxson kicked the door open with the heel of his boot.
BANG.
The door slammed against the interior wall, echoing through the wide office.
Inside, Principal Sterling dropped his fountain pen in shock. Standing right across from his desk was Julian, holding a manila folder, his jaw still visibly bruised from the morning's altercation on the ice.
"Vance!" Principal Sterling gasped, standing up from his leather chair, his face flushing red with anger. "What is the meaning of this intrusion?! You are supposed to be in study hall—"
"Shut up, Sterling," Jaxson said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet, and utterly commanding.
Julian’s face turned deathly pale as his eyes darted from Jaxson to me, then down to our linked hands. He took a nervous step back toward the bookshelf. "Jaxson... listen, if this is about the fight on the ice, I told the principal it was an accident—"
"I don't care about the fight, Julian," Jaxson cut in, stepping further into the room and pulling me along with him. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and tossed it onto Sterling’s desk with a sharp clatter. "Open the live network logs."
Principal Sterling frowned, looking down at the phone, then at Jaxson. "Network logs? For what?"
"At 10:45 AM, a blackmail message was sent to Elena’s personal phone from an encrypted portal address," Jaxson explained, leaning both hands on the edge of Sterling’s desk, looming over the older man. "The IP origin traces directly to the Wi-Fi router in this office, routed through Julian’s student credentials."
Julian gasped, stepping back even further. "That's a lie! I didn't send anything! My phone was in my locker!"
"Your phone was used to access the faculty server forty minutes ago," I said, stepping forward beside Jaxson. My voice trembled at first, but as I looked Julian in the eyes, the betrayal burned away my fear. "You took my ID card from my bag during third period yesterday when you offered to help me carry my chemistry textbooks. You used my credentials to download the answer keys, didn't you?"
"You can't prove that!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "You're a broke scholarship kid! Who is the board going to believe? Me, or a girl whose mother can't even pay her hospital bills?!"
"Her mother's bills are paid in full by the Vance Trust," Jaxson interjected softly.
The room went dead silent.
Principal Sterling blinked in absolute astonishment. "The Vance Trust...?"
"Which means," Jaxson continued, stepping away from the desk and turning his cold gaze onto Julian, "she has no financial debt, no motive to sell exam keys, and the full legal backing of my family's law firm. Meanwhile, Julian... your father’s firm is currently being audited for real estate fraud."
Julian stared at Jaxson in absolute terror. "How... how do you know that?"
"Because my father launched the audit this morning," Jaxson whispered, taking a final step toward Julian until he was inches away from his face. "You wanted to ruin Elena to get leverage over me. But all you did was give me a reason to erase you from Saint Jude's."
Jaxson turned back to Principal Sterling, who was now sweating profusely under his collar.
"You have two choices, Sterling," Jaxson commanded coldly. "You pull the security footage from the hallway outside room 204 from yesterday afternoon, watch Julian take her ID, and issue a full public retraction of her suspension before noon... or my father’s legal team will shut down this entire administration wing by four o'clock."
Principal Sterling swallowed hard, his hands shaking as he pulled his laptop toward himself. "I... I will review the footage immediately, Mr. Vance."
Julian looked at the principal, then at Jaxson, realizing his entire world had collapsed in less than five minutes. He slumped back against the wall, completely broken.
Jaxson didn't spare him another glance. He took my hand again, wrapping his strong fingers around mine, and pulled me out of the office back into the grand hallway.
As the heavy oak doors shut behind us, I let out a long, shaky breath I hadn't realized I was holding. My knees felt weak, but the tight grip of Jaxson’s hand kept me standing tall.
I looked up at him as we walked down the quiet corridor. "It's really over? He can't hurt my mom anymore?"
Jaxson stopped under the stained-glass window at the end of the hall, turning to face me. Sunlight streamed through the glass, casting sharp, dramatic shadows across his face. He reached out with his free hand, his thumb gently catching my chin, tilting my face up to his.
"Julian is done," Jaxson murmured, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intense, suffocating warmth that made my chest tighten. "No one in this school will ever lay a finger on you again."
"And what about you, Jaxson?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What happens to me now?"
A slow, dark smile touched the corner of his lips.
"Now, Little Scholar..." Jaxson whispered, leaning down until his warm breath grazed my cheek, "...you move into my house."
Before I could protest, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.
I pulled it out with a trembling hand, expecting another threat from Julian.
Instead, it was an urgent notification from Vance Memorial Hospital:
[ ALERT: ICU PATIENT DEPT ]
Patient: Clara Rae.
Status: Transfer Authorization Signed.
Signatory: Richard Vance (Senior Board Director).
Note: Patient is currently being moved to a private transport vehicle per order of the Vance Family Legal Estate.
I looked up at Jaxson in sheer terror. "Jaxson... your father just signed a transfer order for my mom! Where are they taking her?!"
Jaxson’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by an icy, lethal glare as he looked down at my phone screen.
"My father isn't trying to help you, Elena," Jaxson whispered, his voice dropping into a terrifying register. "He's trying to take away my leverage over you. We have twenty minutes before her transport van leaves the state."
