Setting things straight.

Arden gives your hand one final, reassuring squeeze before stepping away, grabbing his heavy wool cloak from the hook near the door. "I'm going to take the horse down to the lower cave stables," Arden murmurs softly, lingering for a second to brush his lips over your cheek. "Make sure he's fed and out of the sea spray. I won't be long." The heavy oak door thuds shut behind him, cutting off the sharp howl of the coastal wind. A heavy, suffocating silence settles over the room. Catherine doesn't move immediately. She waits until Arden's heavy footfalls fade down the cliffside path before she steps out from the hearth's shadow. Her sage dress whispers against the flagstones as she approaches, stopping just a few feet away. The dangerous, teasing smuggler from earlier is entirely gone. In her place is a woman whose green eyes are heavy with a cold, devastating clarity. "He looks at you like you're the sun, Amelisse," Catherine says softly, her voice carrying no malice, only the weight of a brutal, unvarnished truth. She folds her arms across her chest, leaning her shoulder against the stone pillar beside you. "I’ve known Arden for six years. I’ve seen him bleeding out in gutters, I’ve seen him dodge the gallows, and I’ve seen him walk away from every woman, every fight, and every coin that got too heavy. He is a ghost. That is how he stays alive." She tilts her head, her gaze piercing right through the brave facade you're trying to hold up. "But with you? He isn't running. He's standing still," Catherine continues, her tone dropping into a low, somber murmur. "He will fight the King's guard for you. He will fight the crown, the army, and the whole bloody realm if he has to. And they will cut him down, piece by piece. You care for him, I can see that. But if you stay with him, Your Highness, you will be the death of him." The words land like lead, but you don't flinch. You don't cry out or try to deny it. "I know," you say quietly, your voice steady, clear, and hollow with an absolute, heartbreaking certainty. Catherine pauses, her sharp eyes widening just a fraction in genuine surprise as she reads the total lack of resistance in your posture. "That's why I cannot stay," you whisper, looking her dead in the eye, letting the full weight of your vow rest between you. "Tonight, while he sleeps, I'm taking the horse and turning myself in at the eastern crossing. I'll make sure the guard knows I acted alone. I won't let anything happen to him." Catherine stares at you for a long, silent moment. The cold edge in her stance completely vanishes, replaced by a profound, solemn respect. She looks at you not as a spoiled royal taking a reckless lark in the woods, but as a woman making the ultimate sacrifice for the man she loves. "He will tear the world apart looking for you if you do this," Catherine warns gently, her voice barely above the crackle of the fire. "He'll be alive to do it," you reply softly. "And that's all that matters." Catherine lets out a slow exhale, looking toward the door where Arden will soon return. She nods once, a silent, solemn pact made in the shadows of the den. "The stable key hangs by the back latch," she murmurs quietly, turning her back to give you space. "And the eastern trail splits at the silver birch. May the gods help you, Amelisse." “I’m not a spoilt royal, Catherine. I’m definitely not what you think I am.” The coldness in your voice stills her in her tracks. Before she can speak, you turn your back to her and gently reach down, gathering the back of your shirt and lifting the linen to expose your skin to the flickering firelight. The room goes entirely motionless. Across your back lies a horrific tapestry of pale, raised welts, jagged silver lines, and old, brutal scars, marks left by years of calculated cruelty. They are not the wounds of battle, but the deliberate, methodical punishment of a tyrant ensuring absolute obedience. "This is what a king does to his daughter to keep her in line," you whisper, your voice steady despite the agony in your heart. "This is what I’ve had to grow up enduring. Every aspect of my life was chosen for me. What I eat, how I dress, what I may say. Everything, up until my wedding night, when I fled and Arden found me in the woods." You lower your shirt, turning back to face her with a gaze so fiercely raw it burns through the lingering quiet of the room. "I did not stay with him to have some fun before returning to Alaric to marry him," you say, each word ringing with absolute, devastating clarity. "I stayed with Arden because I love him. And my time with him will be the only thing that keeps me sane after Alaric is done with what he has planned for me." Catherine stares at you, her mouth parted in stunned, horrified silence. The blood seems to drain completely from her face as her eyes drop from yours to the hem of your shirt, the harsh reality of your life shattering every cynical assumption she had built up about you. For the first time since you met her, the formidable, razor-sharp smuggler looks entirely breathless, utterly shaken by the tragic, selfless depth of your resolve. "Gods." Catherine breathes softly, her voice trembling as she takes a slow, unbidden step backward, pressing a hand to her mouth. "Amelisse,I,” Before she can find the words to apologize, the heavy iron latch on the front door clicks, and the cold coastal wind howls through the frame as Arden steps back inside, shaking the damp mist from his heavy coat. "Horse is settled in the lower cave," Arden calls out warmly, unaware of the sudden, suffocating atmosphere in the room as he kicks the door shut behind him and looks between the two of you. "Everything alright over here?" "Everything is perfectly fine," you say, smooth and quiet, stepping away from the cold glass of the window. Your voice doesn't betray a single tremor, though your heart hammers violently against your ribs. "I was just telling Catherine about the palace. And how terrible the food choices are compared to Barnaby’s incredible stew we had last night." Arden lets out a rich, low laugh, the sound warm and easy as he unclasps his heavy cloak and hangs it by the door. The tension in his broad shoulders melts away completely at the sight of you sounding so composed, so wonderfully intact. "Don't let Barnaby hear you say that, Princess, or his head won't fit through the tavern door," Arden chuckles, crossing the flagstones toward you. He steps close, his golden eyes searching your face with that fierce, quiet affection, entirely oblivious to the silent, tragic pact that was just forged in his absence. "Though he'd probably drag his kettle all the way to the coast just to cook for you again." Beside the stone hearth, Catherine remains frozen for a long, agonizing beat. She stares at you, at the delicate, flawless composure you’ve pulled over yourself like an impenetrable suit of armor. The horror and profound respect are still fighting in her emerald eyes, but as Arden turns his head toward her, Catherine swallows hard and forces a tight, practiced smirk onto her lips. "She's right, Arden," Catherine says, her purring tone returning, though her voice carries a faint, rare roughness she can't entirely hide. "Your royal taste is far too refined for my kitchen. But the ale is warm, and there are sheepskins by the hearth." She looks at you one last time, a long, heavy gaze filled with an unsaid apology and a deep, tragic reverence, before picking up the empty tray. "I'll leave you two to get some rest," Catherine murmurs softly, stepping behind the heavy velvet curtain. "You'll need your strength for whatever comes next." As the curtain falls shut, Arden wraps an arm around your waist from behind, pulling you flush against his chest as he rests his chin on your shoulder, watching the firelight dance across the room. "She's rough around the edges, but you're safe here tonight, Ame," he whispers gently against your cheek, his breath warm and steady. "Get some sleep. I'll stay up and keep watch." You lean back into his heat, closing your eyes tight against the burning tears, counting every single heartbeat against your back knowing this night will have to last you a lifetime. You gently push him back onto the oversized leather armchair, taking his broad hand and guiding him down before climbing into his lap. You pull your knees up, curling yourself tightly against his broad chest and resting your head directly over his beating heart. "I don’t want to sleep," you say softly, your voice barely a breath against the rough linen of his shirt. "I just want to be with you for a bit, I love you, Arden." Arden stills beneath you, the world outside, the howling coastal wind, the looming threat of the crown, the sharp edge of the day, completely dropping away. A quiet, breathless shock gives way to a wave of absolute, unshielded devotion. His large, calloused hands wrap around you, one coming up to cup the back of your head, pressing your cheek closer to his chest, while his other arm pulls you flush against his frame. He buries his face into your soft hair, inhaling deeply, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a long, shaky exhale. "I love you, Amelisse," Arden whispers, his deep voice vibrating right against your ribs, thick and raw with an emotion he no longer cares to hide. "More than my own life. More than my freedom. More than anything I've ever known." He tilts your chin up gently, his golden eyes burning with a fierce, beautiful light in the dim glow of the firelight. He leans down, pressing his warm lips against yours in a slow, lingering kiss, tender, desperate, and utterly selfless. "You don't have to sleep," he rumbles softly against your mouth, his thumbs gently brushing over your cheekbones as he pulls you closer, wrapping both of his heavy arms around you like an unbreakable shield. "Just rest here. I've got you, Princess. I'll always have you." You close your eyes, clinging tightly to the lapels of his coat, memorizing the steady, heavy rhythm of his heart beneath your cheek, letting his heat drown out the cold reality waiting for you in the dark.
