Confronting feelings.

1567 Words
"In the carriage, you said later," I say quietly, my clear voice cutting through the soft patter of the rain outside. "After you spent the entire ride avoiding my eyes. You denied having any feelings for me before the banquet, Bram, yet you looked ready to strangle Quinn every single time he took my hand or stepped into my air at the ball." Bram, who had been adjusting his sword belt, pauses mid motion. His broad shoulders tense, his hands lingering on the leather before he slowly turns to face me. "Trapped in a cave, hiding from guards during a storm." I continue softly, looking right into his dark, troubled eyes. "It seems like the perfect time to clear the air, wouldn’t you say? Unless, you don’t want to discuss it?" Bram lowers himself to the cavern floor across from me, his long legs folded, his massive frame casting a deep shadow in the dim twilight. He rests his forearms on his knees, his jaw tight as he struggles to find the words he's kept buried for so long. "I lied before the banquet," Bram rumbles softly, his deep voice vibrating against the stone walls. "I told myself I was protecting you, and protecting the mission, by keeping my distance. But seeing Quinn touch your waist, seeing him whisper in your ear while I had to stand six paces away like a dutiful shadow." He lets out a low, bitter exhale, shaking his head. "It nearly drove me mad, Ame. Every instinct I had was screaming at me to drag you away from him." He leans in slightly, his dark gaze locking onto mine with an honesty that strips away every defence he has ever built. "I claimed I was just your friend, just your shield," Bram whispers fiercely, the raw truth bleeding through his words. "Because I was terrified of what acknowledging my feelings would do. Arden loves you, he's your partner, the love of your life, and my brother in the guild. I tried so hard to stay in my lane, to be the stoic guardian you needed. But I can't pretend anymore. Watching you tonight, caring for you,I am utterly undone by you, Amelisse. And I am done pretending otherwise." "Bram, I think it’s quite evident that I have feelings for you too," I say softly, the truth hanging warmly between us in the damp cavern air. "But what do we do? I can’t hurt Arden, and yes, I do love him. He was my first kiss, my first love. Even though I lost those memories, I can still feel the deep emotional connection to him. I just don’t know what to do." I take a slow breath, looking across the dim space into his dark, steadfast eyes. "But these past two weeks with you, getting closer, they have been incredible. Doing this mission with you was exhilarating, and I don’t want that to stop," I continue, my clear voice filled with genuine warmth and conflict. "What do you think, Bram? Any ideas as to what we can do in this situation? Because if we end up together, not only will it tear Arden apart, but it will cause a massive rift in the Blackhand Guild." Bram listens without interrupting, his massive frame motionless as he absorbs every word. The quiet mention of Arden's history with me causes a fleeting shadow of pain to pass over his features, but he doesn't flinch away. He remains grounded, his respect for Arden and his deep affection for me keeping him entirely still. He exhales a long, heavy breath, resting his wrists on his knees as he looks down at the cavern floor before turning his steady gaze back to mine. "I won't lie to you, Ame," Bram rumbles softly, his deep voice thick with quiet gravity. "There is no simple, clean way out of this. Arden is my brother in arms. I would take a blade for him without a second thought, and the last thing I ever wanted was to drive a dagger into his chest like this." He shifts closer, stopping just far enough to respect my space while offering the full weight of his focus. "Arden knows how I feel, he confronted me before we left, and he called me out on it. He saw right through me," Bram confesses gently. "He loves you with everything he has, and he deserves honesty. If we try to sneak around or hide this in the shadows, that betrayal will tear the guild apart from the inside out when it inevitably comes to light." He looks into my eyes, his expression fierce yet remarkably tender. "We don't make any reckless decisions tonight, in a dark cave while running from the High Admiral's search parties," Bram says, his tone rock solid. "First, we finish this mission. We get these ledgers to safety, and we ensure those twenty four captives make it down the river with Arden. When the dust settles and we are all back on safe ground, the three of us sit down together. Face to face. No lies, no evasions." He reaches out, his large, warm hand covering my uninjured knee with a gentle, grounding pressure. "I won't walk away from what we've built these past two weeks, Ame, I can't. But I also won't force you to break Arden's heart in secret. Whatever choice lies ahead, we face it with honour. Together." Bram remains quiet for a long moment, his dark eyes fixed on the cavern floor between us as the heavy rain continues to drum against the stone entrance. "Unless." Bram begins softly, the word coming out heavy and reluctant. "Unless we go back to being friends. We keep our distance for a while? until the heat dissipates. And we go on like we did before." He keeps his gaze lowered, his broad jaw clenching as if voicing the suggestion physically pains him. I lean forward slightly, my eyes searching his stoic profile. "Is that what you want, Bram?" Slowly, Bram lifts his head. The raw conflict in his dark eyes is startling, a fierce struggle between his deep desire to be near me and his unyielding sense of honor toward Arden and the guild. "No," Bram rumbles, the single word dripping with absolute, undeniable honesty. "It isn't what I want. Denying what I feel for you for these past two weeks has felt like trying to hold back a flood with my bare hands. Every time you smile at me, every time we train together, going back to pretending you're just another guildmate would kill me by inches." He exhales a long, heavy breath, his chest heaving under his leather armor. "But if that is what you need to protect your heart, or to give yourself time to figure things out with Arden." Bram continues, his voice dropping into a rough, fiercely gentle whisper, "Then I will do it. I will step back. I will be your protector, your friend, and nothing more. Because your peace matters more to me than my own desires." He reaches out, his large, warm hand coming to rest lightly over mine where it grips my knee, offering me complete control over what happens next. "So tell me, Ame," he murmurs, his dark eyes burning into mine. "Can you truly go back to how things were? Or has everything already changed?" "I think everything has changed," I say softly, the words coming out as a steady, resolute truth that settles into the cool air between us. I look up into Bram's dark eyes, letting the honesty flow unbidden. "The night Arden let Collette whisper poison in his ear, the night he looked at me and told me I shouldn’t have come back, the trust was broken between us. Something fundamental shattered right then." Bram remains motionless, but his breathing deepens, his full attention locked on every nuance of my voice. "And then you gave me refuge at your cottage," I continue, a gentle warmth touching my words despite the gravity of the memory. "We spoke. You taught me how to handle a dagger, and I taught you how to dance. I think that night was when everything changed, Bram. Not tonight, not during the chase. That was the moment." A profound silence settles over the cavern. The heavy rain outside begins to soften into a gentle drizzle as the storm crests over the crags, but inside, the atmosphere is electric. Bram exhales a long, slow breath, a mixture of immense relief and fierce, protective devotion washing over his features. The tight, agonising tension that held his shoulders relaxes just a fraction. He doesn't pull away, nor does he press forward aggressively; instead, his thumb strokes gently across the back of my hand where it rests on my knee. "Then there is no going back," Bram rumbles, his deep voice carrying a quiet, unshakable weight. "I won't let you carry the weight of that broken trust alone anymore, Ame. If Arden threw away what you built, he made his choice. But I will still face him like a man.” He turns his hand to lace his fingers with mine, his grip warm, solid, and reassuring against the chill of the stone. "Whatever comes next, whether it's facing Arden at the river, dealing with the High Admiral's search parties, or taking down your father, you have me. Completely."
