Arden, who had been spearing a piece of roast pork a few seats down, sets his knife down with a heavy clatter, leaning forward. "The intelligence was rotten, Guild master," Arden says, his tone respectful but firm, setting the narrative Collette and he agreed upon. "The manifest from the capital had the carriage listed with six light outriders. When we made the pass at the gorge, we walked right into twelve Vanguard retainers and a hired abjurer with a heavy repeater." Vane doesn't flinch beneath Bram's towering silhouette. He leans back against the wall, swirling the ale in his cup, his voice laced with mocking nonchalance. "Someone sold you bad parchment, Bram," Vane chimes in, his tone deliberately casual, hiding the underlying venom behind an operative's professional critique. "Or your contact in the ministry wanted us buried under the scree. The target's carriage was retrofitted with iron plates. It was an ambush waiting for a mark, not a routine courier run." Bram’s dark eyes flicker between Arden and Vane, his brow furrowing deeply as his jaw works in furious calculation. "And the magistrate?" "At the bottom of the ravine, along with his coin and his ledgers," I speak up, keeping my voice cool, steady, and detached as I take a sip of the bitter ale. "The strongbox is locked in the cellar vault. Mission complete, despite the Vanguard knowing we were coming." Bram’s gaze snaps back to me at the sound of my voice. The professional commander wars openly with the man who claimed he had to discard me for my own good, his dark eyes burning with an intense, lingering hunger that threatens to unravel the cold lie he built between us. "I'll ensure I have a very thorough talk with the contract holder," Bram says, his voice flat, icy, and carrying the lethal promise of retribution. His dark eyes linger on the table for a fraction of a second before locking squarely back onto me, peeling away from the squad entirely. "Ame. Come with me," Bram says plainly, gesturing toward the shadowed archway that leads to the administrative wing. "I would like to discuss something with you." Beside me, the casual slouch in Vane’s shoulders instantly vanishes. His uninjured hand tightens around the pewter tankard until the metal groans under his knuckles, his eyes turning cold as a winter blade. Across the bench, Collette’s gaze darts up, her fork pausing halfway to her mouth. I keep my hands flat on the scarred oak table, offering Bram a small, tired shake of my head. "Bram, I’m exhausted," I say softly, keeping my tone mild and polite, appealing to reason. "I was hoping to just rest, have some dinner and an ale, and turn in for the night." The mild deflection hits him like an insult. Bram’s expression hardens instantly into impenetrable stone, his jaw setting with rigid, unyielding authority. The lingering concern in his features vanishes, replaced by the suffocating weight of his rank. "Amelisse," he snaps, each syllable clipped, cold, and echoing off the vaulted timber rafters of the hall. "It was not a request. In my study. Now." The hall drops into absolute silence. The few sell swords sharing the trencher down the table quickly duck their heads over their bowls, not daring to step into the crosshairs of the Guild master's wrath. Beneath the bench, Vane’s knee knocks against mine, a silent, desperate urge to hold my ground, but I know the rules of this fortress better than anyone. Defying an explicit order from the Guild master in front of the common roster would give him every legal excuse to lock me down or strip my standing. I swallow the bitter retort rising in my throat and push back from the trestle bench, rising quickly to my feet. "Understood." I murmur, keeping my gaze low and composed. I don't dare look down at Vane, terrified that the fury in his eyes will betray the storm brewing between us, but I feel his gaze searing into my back as I step out from the bench. With my chin held high to mask the knot tightening in my stomach, I follow Bram’s sweeping dark cloak out of the dining hall and down the dim stone corridor toward his private quarters. The heavy iron latch drops into place with a dull, echoing click, shutting out the rest of the world. The study smells of dried ink, old parchment, and the rich, cedar-smoke musk that has always belonged exclusively to him. I bypass the velvet cushioned armchairs and lean against the edge of his massive mahogany table, crossing my arms over my chest, steeling my spine. Every muscle in my neck is braced for the blow, the icy reprimand, the sharp lecture on squad discipline, the Guild master asserting his iron control after being contradicted in front of his operatives. Instead, the second the latch seals, Bram’s entire posture shatters. The rigid, imperious mask he wears for the guild simply falls away. His broad shoulders sag beneath the heavy fur collar of his cloak, letting out a long, ragged exhale that sounds pulled from the bottom of his lungs. He turns toward me, the cold stone of his expression replaced by something raw, hollow, and utterly exposed. "Are you alright?" he asks, his voice barely above a murmur, thick with a desperate, unshielded tenderness that makes my skin crawl. The words land like a splash of oil on hot coals. My blood instantly roars in my ears, hot and furious. Are you alright? After calling me out like a disgraced novice in front of the entire roster. After discarding me in the dark and claiming my presence made him weak. After dragging me into his private sanctum under the weight of his rank, only to shed it the moment no one is looking. I dig my fingernails into the leather of my vambraces under my crossed arms, forcing the boiling rage down behind a flat, impassive mask. "I’m tired, Bram," I say, my voice clipped, cool, and devoid of warmth. "I can imagine," he says softly, stepping closer to me. The firelight from the hearth catches the silver at his temples, his dark eyes brimming with that heavy, tortured melancholy he wields so effortlessly. He stops just a breath away, looking down at me while I remain perched on the edge of the mahogany desk. The scent of him, cedar, clove, and rain, hangs thick in the air between us, a ghost of something that used to have the power to break me. "You gave me some things to think about before you left, Ame," Bram continues, his voice hushed, raspy with an ache that sounds almost painfully sincere. "And I have been thinking. You want marriage and a family. You were right, those are things I cannot give you." He slowly raises a hand, his long, calloused fingers hesitating in the space between us before reaching forward, clearly wanting to touch my cheek, to pull me into the familiar, suffocating orbit of his regret. "The guild demands everything I am," he murmurs, his jaw tightening as he swallows hard, his dark eyes searching mine with raw, unshielded desperation. "It eats away at whatever soft pieces a man has left until there is nothing of substance to offer a hearth or a home. I know that. I accept that." He takes that final half step, closing the distance until the heavy fur of his cloak brushes against my knees, his hand trembling slightly in the air before him. "You deserve the life you envision, Ame. I know I should step back. I know I should let you walk away clean." His voice breaks on a low, pained whisper, his dark eyes pleading with me to soften, to break the ice I've built around myself. "But I still can't seem to let go of you. Every time you ride out those gates, every time I see blood on your squad's blades, it tears through me. I can't breathe when you're not here." I lean back just far enough that his outstretched fingers grasp empty air, refusing him even the brush of my skin. My voice drops, cold and precise as a parrying dagger, stripping away every ounce of the tired deference I had worn in the corridor. "You need to let go of me, Bram." His hand drops back to his side, his fingers curling tight as if burned by the sudden chill in my eyes. "What do you actually expect from me?" I ask, stepping down from the desk so we stand toe-to-toe, refusing to look up at him like a subordinate. "Do you expect me to sneak into your bed at night? To give myself to you in secret? Let you keep a possessive, suffocating hold on me in the dark, only to shove me aside in the light of day?"
