Cut!

LEILANI I’ve never been this nervous about a job in so long. Jasmine paid for an Uber who took me to the upper side of town for the auditions. As the car drove past the road, her words replayed in my head. “You don’t have to be nervous, girl.” “Just go there and show them you are the best at what you do.” Given my history with stripping, I knew I shouldn’t be nervous. It was literally something I knew like the palm of my hand. However, with everything riding on my ability to secure this job, I was feeling a bit blue. What if? A lot of what-ifs clouded my mind as the car shot forward. We soon got to the venue. The dark night sky covered the air, with stars scattered around it. There was no moon in sight. The Uber driver dropped me right in front of a building made of glass. I stepped out of the car, dressed in a long black slit dress that showed off my long legs and a belt that accentuated my figure. I wore a stunning bikini made out of fishnets, just in case. Coupled with my straight long hair, nude makeup, and stiletto heels, I thought I was decent enough for the job. I looked up at the building and a large D and L hung on the wall, with the word ‘Studios’ written in italics and matching the directions I was given. I took a deep breath and proceeded into the building, greeting the security detail at the gate and wondering when they all got off work, seeing it was a good minute past nine p.m. and they were all still on. The entrance oozed luxury, and when I stepped into the building, taking into account the marble floors, white and black aesthetics of the reception, I felt a knot tie in my stomach. I walked right to the reception with a smile on my face as I made an inquiry. “Hi,” I greeted the young lady who sat behind the desk. “I was hoping to try for the stunt double role?” The woman gave me a look that made me wonder if I was in fact in the right place. “You mean the one that started two hours ago?” she asked with such an attitude, I held my tongue to stop myself from returning the energy. I painstakingly held up my smile as I continued speaking. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I was late,” I said, desperate. “I was told the auditions started at nine. Could I still audition for the role? I’d be glad if you could slot me in.” The young woman didn’t spare me a look, eyes focused on her laptop. Just when I was ready to call it a day, she spoke up. “Take the elevator,” she directed. “First floor to your right. Good luck.” My eyes widened and I clutched my purse. “Thank you! I won’t forget this.” I didn’t wait to hear her response. Instead, I walked as fast as my legs could afford, waiting for the elevator. There were two elevators, and when I realized the first one would take a minute, I boarded the next one, pressing on my floor. I took a deep breath, nerves dancing in my stomach as I watched the door close. A second before the doors were permanently shut, someone’s feet stepped between the doors. I watched the elevator doors reopen, revealing the most gorgeous man I’ve seen in a long time. I swallowed as a man dressed in a white shirt and suit pants walked into the elevator. His striking blue eyes lit something within me as our eyes connected, sending sweet signals down my stomach. The man walked right into the elevator, his tall and broad shoulders taking up the space as he stood beside me with an arm in his pocket. The air cracked with tension, and it suddenly felt hot. My heart thrummed in my chest and I swallowed, and my throat felt parched. “Haven’t seen you before,” he broke the silence. His voice was a perfect synergy between deep and gruff, coordinated yet authoritative. “I’m Dominic.” His voice made me feel nervous, and I twitched under his hard gaze. “That’s because I’m here for a job,” I state, keeping it short. Thankfully, we got to my stop and I was ready to leave when I caught his words. “You didn’t tell me your name.” His aura was dominant and imposing in all the right proportions. I stood outside the elevator, memorizing his broad lips, sharp jawline, and brown perfectly cut hair. “You didn’t ask,” I say in a sultry tone, right on time to close the elevator doors. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding as soon as the doors sealed shut, took a few seconds to reorient myself before heading in the direction given to me by the receptionist. Soon enough, I found myself standing before what seemed like a shoot. Cameras, lighting, and wires littered the area, and there was a sharp silence in the air as everyone watched a girl do what I believed to be a strip dance in front of a male who lay on the bed, doused in makeup. “Cut!” a man who stood in front of a camera shouted with a grim look on his face. “That was awful. Absolutely terrible,” he remarked while the others kept silent. “You are supposed to seduce him, not dance around him,” he critiqued. “I need chemistry, intensity, something more than you are offering.” I stood by the corner as I watched the girl pull off the mic from her dress and walk out of the set with a loud ‘I quit.’ The second floor was an open space filled, and for the next minute, people chatted about what I presumed to be the drama that played out before us. “This is crazy,” the supposed director said. “That was the last of them. We cannot run this shoot without a f*****g female lead.” He pulled out his phone and his features turned worse. “Just great. Boss will be here in five and we have nothing to present.” “Someone needs to step up,” he demanded. “So who is it going to be?” he asked, looking between the crew members who suddenly went quiet. “What? Not one of you can step in and do the darn job?” The entire floor remained quiet, tension in the air. When no one said a word, I cleared my throat, grabbing their attention. “I came for the auditions.”
