LEILANI
I stood in the middle of the office with a beating heart.
This was going to be a bad idea. I knew it. I could feel it within me. Working as Landon Lancleste’ assistant was not something I thought I’d one day be considering - but I had bills to pay.
My mother still lay in the hospital and the weight of hospital bills and student debts was crushing me. I couldn’t walk away from such an unreal amount of money.
Not in my state.
“I don’t have all day, Leila,” he suddenly said, hands hovering over the telephone. “There are a lot of candidates-”
“I’ll take it!” I blurted, eyes closed as I imagined just what I was getting myself into. “I’ll take the job.”
Saying those words aloud was hurtful. My throat hurt from saying those words and when I saw his lips tug in a smirk, I knew I was done for.
“I’ve always known you were a smart girl,” he said, and I bit my tongue to stop myself from hurling just how many times he’s called me stupid, easy and ugly in time past.
I swallowed my words, reminding myself that whether I liked it or not, he was now my boss.
“You will wait a couple of minutes while I arrange your contract,” he said and I nodded, ready to step out when he stopped me with his words.
“Take a seat on the couch, Leila,” he said, and I blinked.
“Don’t you have more candidates to see?” I slapped my hand over my mouth as soon as the words left my lips.
“Yes,” he said, hands flaring over his laptop. He dramatically punched one of his keys, bringing his typing spree to an end before looking up to me with a raised brow. “Is there a problem, Leila?”
I shook my head in response, letting my eyes drop to the floor. Was he going to let me be in here while he interviewed the others? I thought, sitting tensely on the couch.
A few seconds later, some knocks came from the door, and I stiffened on the couch. “Come in,” Landon said in a gruff tone and the door clicked open.
A woman who looked right in her twenties stepped in with a glass and a pack of juice. “Drop it on the table,” Landon ordered without as little as a glance up.
The young lady who was dressed in a sleeveless black corset dress which stopped just between her knees, and a bold red lipstick, seemed taken aback for a minute.
However, she dropped the tray as directed, threw me a scrutinizing look before proceeding to speak. “Sir, the board is currently on the seat and waiting for your arrival,” she said with a sweet smile.
“And the HR has informed me of the candidates who are still waiting for your selection.” She cast another look my way. “Would there still be a need or have you made your selection, sir?”
Landon didn’t say a word for a full minute, causing me to feel second-hand embarrassment for the young lady who was obviously uncomfortable.
“Sir-”
“Shhhh,” Landon said from his desk, still typing on his laptop.
Just when I thought it wasn’t going to get worse than that, he topped my expectations with his next words.
“Why are you standing there, serve the drink,” he ordered in a flippant tone that left my throat dry.
The young lady blinked, quickly putting on a smile. “I’m sorry, sir!” she said, going on to pour the drink in a glass.
I watched the young woman place the filled cup of drink on the tray before proceeding towards his desk. A few metres away from him, he looked up and I watched the most ugly expression marr his face at the sight of the woman standing with the drink.
“Don’t be stupid,” he gritted. “Serve her.”
I near darned froze at his words. “W-What?” I stuttered, brows narrowed in confusion.
Landon threw a look towards me, “Is the drink not to your liking?” he asked. “What would you prefer? Wine?”
My blood raced as I felt the gaze of the lady shift towards me as I tried to rectify myself. “I didn’t - I am alright, thank you,” I managed to squeak but Landon was persistent.
“Don’t tell me you take alcohol so early in the morning, Lei,” he said. “I could have them bring in-”
“Water!” I blurted, shifting in discomfort. “I’ll have some water, please.”
I turned to the young lady who looked less than pleased to know she was going to have to serve me. I swallowed, wondering if it was too late to take back my words on this job.
“You heard her,” Landon said with a grit to his tone. “And take the juice with you.”
I swallowed hard as I watched the young lady clear up the tray and walk out of the place with the juice, not without throwing some unsettling looks my way.
As soon as the door shut, I turned to Landon with wide eyes. “What was that?!”
Just then, I heard the printer go off and he stepped out of his desk, gathering the papers as it printed and bundling them up.
“Your contract is ready,” he stated, a smirk on his lips as he squints. “Did you say something, feisty?”
“Why would you act like-” I held my temples, feeling my blood rush. “Who was that?”
“My assistant,” he muttered, placing the document right in front of me. My eyes turned the size of saucers.
“What?!” I knew it was too good to be true. I picked up my bag, feeling shame well up within me. “What? Is this another one of your stupid pranks?!” I yelled, anger coursing through me.
“Easy, Lei-”
I picked up the f*****g ‘contract’ and threw it right in his face, shutting him up. “Don’t you f*****g finish that line,” I yelled, veins pulsing in my forehead. “Darn it, do you f*****g think this is high school?”
I turned, beating myself up for even entertaining this joke. “Can’t believe I wasted my f*****g time-”
“Leilani!” he roared but I didn’t give a f**k.
I continued walking, desperate to get out of the f*****g office until I felt a hand wrap over my arm and pull me right into his frame.
I was immediately greeted by his intoxicating amber scent which travelled up my nose, as well as his perfectly arched brows which were creased together.
“Take one more step and the offer is gone, Leila,” he gritted. “Do not f*****g test me.”
I knew I shouldn’t have done it. I knew I should have let him play circus all on his own but I couldn’t help it.
I stepped in his face, aware of the dangerously small space between us as I gave him a piece of my mind. “You mean the offer to be your assistant?” I asked in a mocking tone. “The one that was already filled up by our little bimbo from before?” I pushed. “Huh, Landon?”
I watched his face turn into that of recognition and I felt my blood boil further. “So that’s the problem...”
While he was still speaking, the door flung open and the woman from before stepped in. “You’re fired,” Landon said in a cold tone, and the water literally fell off the lady’s hand, shattering to tiny little pieces.
I watched with wide eyes as he turned to me with a question at the tip of his tongue. “Is that okay, feisty?”
