You don't know that

LEILANI I sat in a large office with the boss over the table, staring at me with intense blue eyes. The air reeked with tension, and I shifted uncomfortably on my seat, feeling a subtle pressure on my chest. “Tell me, Leilani,” he said, relaxing on his chair. “What do you do for a living?” I stiffened, a small panic in my chest. I hesitated to answer, unsure of what to say, which caused him to lean forward, giving me a good look at his beautiful baby lashes. “Do you have any experience in acting?” he asked again, watching me intently. “Not really,” I said, sucking in a breath. “It’s my first time doing anything of the sort.” A half-lie. One I hoped he wouldn’t probe further. “That means you’re a natural.” A pressure lifted from my chest at his words. “You did amazing out there.” A natural blush tinted my cheeks. “Thank you.” “So good that your co-star didn’t just meet the cut.” I smiled graciously, humbled by his remarks, until I understood the intent of his words. “What?” His lips tugged in a laid-back smile, and my heart skipped at the sight of it. “You heard me.” He got off his seat, walking around his table until he stood in front of me. “You can’t possibly think that he’d get the gig after how he acted.” I blinked, trying to organise my thoughts, which proved hard with every second that passed as he stood in front of me. “I think he did amazing,” I dared to say, and Dominic chuckled. “He had a boner,” he said so plainly, I felt heat creep up my cheeks. I sported a scandalized look. How in the world was he managing to say that so comfortably? “Tell me, Leilani. How is he supposed to survive the several hours of reading lines, building chemistry, and eventually acting the darned script if he grows a boner on the first audition?” My jaw dropped to the floor at his words. What? “The last thing I need is having this project suffer because a man can’t control himself around a beautiful woman,” he added, gaze intense. “Not that I blame him.” “But I’d rather save the entire crew a few extra hours during the filming process.” He tsked. “No one would enjoy stopping an entire set for a few minutes because he needed to take care of a problem between shoots.” My eyes bogged out of their sockets, and I couldn’t help the laughter that escaped my throat. “What do you mean?” I said between laughs, and he stayed put. “You know what I mean,” he said, leaving it at that. “We’ll have to find you a new co-star, and I have just the perfect fit.” The thought of having to wait for another audition left me feeling blue. I needed the money as soon as possible to settle some bills. “You’ll come in a few days a week to build chemistry and read a few lines with the new lead actor,” he said. “Our staff’s head will contact you with the gory details.” “Do I have to come around for the re-audition?” I asked, and he tilted his head. “That won’t be necessary,” he said, confusing me further. “I am pretty sure the male lead I have in mind will fit in perfectly.” “You don’t know that,” I said, looking him in the eye. Dominic leaned closer - so close I could feel his breath on my face. I swallowed hard as chemistry sizzled between us. “I believe I just verified my claims, Leila,” he breathed, and I felt a knot in my throat. Dominic leaned back, putting some much-needed space between us before speaking. “It’s late,” he said. “I’d love to escort you, but-” “I’ll be on my way!” I squeaked, getting up on my feet and quickly making my way out of the office. I rushed past some of the workers I met earlier and took an elevator downstairs. While in the elevator, I tried to wrap my head around what the hell was going on. Did he mean I was going to work with him? Was that even appropriate? Hell, was any of the things he said and did to me appropriate? Was it appropriate that a part of me enjoyed and liked his attention? The elevator beeped, signalling I’d arrived at the ground floor. I shook off the thoughts in my head and took a look at the time. It was past nine. I stepped out of the elevator, trying to reorganise my thoughts. Now was barely the time to be fawning over a man that would be my boss and co-star in the next couple of weeks. My heart skipped at the thought of working with him. I placed my hand on my chest, willing it to be calm as I walked past the receptionist, who called me back, requesting my details. I willfully gave her my details, leaving afterward. By the time I got back at the apartment, the door was locked. I reached above the door and thankfully found a single key placed above it. I tried the door, and it opened in one try. I got into the apartment and turned on the lights. The first thing I saw was a note, neatly folded on the table, from Jasmine. I picked it up and read through it. Apparently, something came up, and she wouldn’t be back till tomorrow evening to discuss how it all went. I let out a breath and plopped on the couch, taking a huge breath as I reminisced the day’s event. Maybe it was a good thing I had the night to myself. It gave me ample time to do some thinking and prepare for my day tomorrow. The next day, I woke up early, deciding to get a run in before starting my job hunting. I went out, running through a few streets, before returning home to check my emails and finally hit the roads. I took a bath and made a quick pancake for breakfast. After which, I settled down with a plate, eating and simultaneously going through my mails. I nearly choked on my meal when I saw an email from one of the many PR firms I applied to. My eyes widened as I read through the mail, inviting me to come to the office for an interview. Not to mention, I had just twenty minutes to get there. I breezed through the meal, my heart beating nervously as I jumped into the room, scanning through Jasmine’s clothes and making a mental note to thank her later.
