As the sun began to set on another day at sea, Rory and Ethan made their way to the ship's restaurant for dinner. They had spent the day lounging by the pool, taking the occasional dip to cool off, and Rory was feeling relaxed and happy.
As they sat down at their table, Ethan reached across and took Rory's hand. "I'm so glad we're doing this," he said, looking into her eyes.
Rory smiled, feeling a little shy. "I'm glad too," she said.
Their dinner arrived, and they spent the next hour eating and chatting. Rory was amazed at how easy it was to talk to Ethan, how much they had in common.
As they finished up their dessert, Ethan leaned back in his chair and looked at Rory with a serious expression. "Can I ask you something?" he said.
Rory nodded, feeling a little curious. "Of course," she said.
"What's the story with you and your ex?" Ethan asked, his eyes locked onto hers.
Rory felt a little taken aback by the question. She hadn't expected Ethan to ask her about her past, and she wasn't sure she was ready to talk about it.
But as she looked into Ethan's eyes, she saw something there that made her trust him. She saw kindness, and compassion, and a genuine desire to understand her.
So she took a deep breath, and began to tell Ethan about her ex. She told him about how they had met, and how they had fallen in love. She told him about how her ex had cheated on her, and how she had been left heartbroken.
As she talked, Rory felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. She had never really talked about her ex before, not like this. And it felt good, felt cathartic, to finally be honest about her feelings.
Ethan listened attentively, his eyes never leaving hers. He didn't say anything, didn't try to offer any advice or condolences. He just listened, and that was exactly what Rory needed.
When she finished talking, Ethan reached across and took her hand. "I'm so sorry," he said, his voice full of emotion. "You deserve so much better than that."
Rory smiled, feeling a little tears-eyed. "Thank you," she said. "That means a lot coming from you."
As they sat there, holding hands and looking into each other's eyes, Rory felt a sense of connection with Ethan that she had never felt before. She felt like she could be herself around him, like she didn't have to pretend or put on a mask.
And as the night wore on, Rory realized that she was falling for Ethan, hard. She was falling for his kindness, and his compassion, and his genuine desire to understand her.
She was falling for him, and she wasn't sure if she was ready.
As they left the restaurant and made their way back to their cabins, Rory felt a little uncertain. She didn't know what the future held, or what Ethan's intentions were.
But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that made her trust him. She saw sincerity, and kindness, and a genuine affection for her.
And with that, Rory knew that she was willing to take a chance. She was willing to risk her heart, to see where things might go with Ethan.
As they stood outside her cabin, Ethan turned to her and smiled. "I had a great time tonight," he said.
Rory smiled back, feeling a little shy. "I had a great time too," she said.
Ethan leaned in, his eyes locked onto hers. "I'll see you tomorrow," he whispered.
And with that, he kissed her, his lips soft and gentle against hers.
Rory felt a spark of electricity at the touch, and she knew that she was in trouble. She was falling for Ethan, hard.
And as she watched him walk away, Rory couldn't help but wonder what the future held. Would they fall in love, or would they part ways when the cruise was over?
Only time would tell.
