10. A Month later

860 Words
Months slipped by like pages turning in a well-worn novel, the bitter chill of winter giving way to the soft, golden warmth of spring across the Lavalton High campus. In that span, the heavy shadows that once clung to Aurelia had entirely dissolved. Walking through the imposing gothic archways no longer felt like navigating a minefield; with Desmond firmly at her side, the venomous whispers of Bianca and her circle had lost their bite, reduced to impotent background noise. Aurelia found her footing, her old insecurities giving way to a bright, infectious laugh and a quiet, unshakeable confidence that blossomed whenever she was near him. They were a fixture of the halls, bound by a loyalty so fierce that even the most cynical socialites dared not interfere. Until a Tuesday morning in late spring when the second row beside her remained jarringly empty. Aurelia paused as she pulled her books from her locker, her gaze drifting instinctively toward the tall windows where Desmond’s leather satchel should have been resting. The desk was bare, polished, and cold. A strange, hollow knot formed instantly in the pit of her stomach, the old, dormant reflex of abandonment flickering faintly to life before she forcefully stamped it down. He wouldn't just leave, she reminded herself, gripping her notebook tightly. He’s just running late. She hurried through first period in a haze of distraction, her heart hammering every time the classroom door creaked open. But the bell for break rang, and he still hadn’t appeared. It wasn't until she reached into her pocket during the passing period that her phone buzzed softly against her palm. She pulled it out, her breath catching as she saw his name glowing on the screen. “Can’t be there today,” the text read, his signature blunt directness softening only slightly in the words that followed. “The board forced an emergency convening at the estate. Scott Holdings is restructuring the succession papers a year early. My father locked me in the study with three lawyers and a mountain of ledgers. I’m drowning in corporate legalese, but I’d rather be sitting in the back of the library with you. I’ll text you tonight. Don’t let the ghouls get to you.” A soft, breathless smile touched Aurelia’s lips, the tight knot in her chest finally loosening into a warm puddle of affection. Even buried under the crushing weight of a billionaire dynasty and a fleet of corporate lawyers, his first instinct had been to reach out to her. She tapped out a quick reply—“Go survive the lawyers, Boss. I’ll be fine”—and tucked her phone away, stepping back into the courtyard with her head held high, carrying the quiet, steady warmth of his presence even in his absence. The heavy oak doors of the library groaned softly as Aurelia pushed them open, stepping into the familiar, cavernous sanctuary of towering mahogany bookshelves and slanting afternoon sunlight. The air here always smelled of old paper, polished wood, and quiet refuge. For the past few months, this vaulted alcove had been her safe harbor, a place where Desmond’s presence lingered even when he was trapped miles away buried under corporate ledgers. She settled into her usual secluded wooden carrel tucked deep in the back corner, pulling her favorite poetry anthology from her satchel. A soft, fond smile touched her lips as she thought of his morning text, the weight of his absence softened by the absolute certainty that he would message her the moment he escaped his lawyers. For a little while, the world was peaceful. The rhythmic scratching of her pencil against the margin of a page and the gentle rustle of turning paper filled her ears. Then, the heavy silence of the library shifted. It wasn't the usual quiet shuffle of a student looking for a reference book or the soft padding of the librarian’s loafers. It was the sharp, echoing click of designer heels on parquet flooring, marching with deliberate, heavy cadence deep into the stacks where no one usually bothered to tread. Aurelia’s hand paused over her book. She lifted her head, her breath catching as the sound drew closer, weaving purposefully through the labyrinth of shelves. "I told you she’d be hiding in her little rat hole," a cool, melodic voice drifted through the dusty air, dripping with malicious satisfaction. Aurelia’s heart hammered against her ribs as Bianca Will stepped around the corner of the aisle, flanked on either side by her two inseparable shadows. Bianca wasn't wearing her usual pristine, bored mask; her eyes were bright with a manic, vindictive triumph, and a razor-sharp smirk curved across her lips. The heavy iron fire door at the far end of the archive aisle clicked shut behind them, sealing off the exit. "Looking for your bodyguard, Aurelia?" Bianca purred, stepping forward and planting both hands flat on the wooden edge of Aurelia’s study carrel, trapping her in the corner. "Too bad. The Scott family is busy turning him into a corporate machine today, and you are entirely, beautifully alone." “W-what do you guys want…? I-I didn’t do anything to you…”
