A sharp, cruel laugh echoed off the towering mahogany shelves, breaking the heavy silence of the archive alcove. Bianca leaned in closer, the scent of expensive perfume doing nothing to mask the raw malice radiating from her expression. "You didn't do anything?" Bianca mocked, her voice dropping into a low, venomous hiss. "You’ve spent months parading around like you actually belong here, hiding behind Desmond’s broad shoulders while he fights your battles. But he’s not here to play hero today, is he? No lawyers, no bodyguards, no protective little speeches." One of Bianca’s cronies stepped up beside her, crossing her arms and sneering down at Aurelia with undisguised contempt. "We just wanted to have a little chat," Bianca continued, her fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat against the wooden desk as she blocked Aurelia’s only escape route. "To remind you of the natural order of things. People like you—charity cases plucked from obscurity—don't get fairy tales, Aurelia. The second Desmond finishes signing those succession papers and enters the real adult world of high society, his family will hand him a list of proper, blue-blooded debutantes to marry. You are a phase. A temporary distraction. And it's about time you woke up before he does." Aurelia’s breath hitched, the old, familiar terror clawing at her throat. Her hands trembled as she clutched her book against her chest, the cruel words striking precisely at the fragile insecurities she thought she had buried forever. “No…! Stop lying… he’s not…!” The heavy thud of the book striking the wooden desktop reverberated sharply through the quiet stacks, the sound fierce and startling in the enclosed space. Aurelia’s hands shook violently as she kept them pressed against the cover, her chest heaving as she forced herself to look up, her eyes wide and burning with a desperate, unyielding defiance that caught Bianca entirely off guard. For a fleeting second, the smug, untouchable smirk wavered on Bianca's face, replaced by a flash of genuine shock. But it vanished just as quickly, hardening back into bitter, venomous irritation. "Oh, look at that," Bianca sneered, recovering her composure as she leaned down, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "The stray actually learned how to bare its teeth. How cute. But getting loud in an empty library doesn't change reality, Aurelia. You can slam all the books you want—it won't rewrite your birth certificate, and it won't stop the Scotts from doing what’s best for their dynasty." Before Aurelia could summon the voice to fire back, the heavy iron fire door at the end of the archive aisle—the one Bianca’s crony had clicked shut earlier—suddenly shuddered with a violent, deafening bang. The loud crash rattled the dust motes in the slanting sunlight, freezing everyone in place. The second iron door didn't just rattle; it groaned under an immense, unyielding pressure from the hallway outside, as if someone had thrown their entire weight against the frame with single-minded, terrifying fury. Bianca’s head snapped toward the aisle entrance, the color instantly draining from her face. The heavy oak panels of the inner library doors gave a final, splintering c***k, and footsteps—fast, heavy, and furious—stamped across the parquet floor, closing the distance to the dark alcove with the terrifying speed of an oncoming storm. A heavy, suffocating silence fractured instantly as the sound of multiple pairs of heels echoed sharply across the polished parquet floor. The single fire door had only been the opening salvo. From the main entrance of the library, a fresh wave of figures poured into the stacks—not just Bianca's inner circle, but girls from other high-status cliques across Lavalton High, drawn like vultures to the scent of isolation. They moved with a synchronized, predatory grace, surrounding the wooden study carrel on all sides. Their expressions were twisted into identical masks of bitter jealousy, cold entitlement, and unrestrained malice. Months of forced politeness, of biting their tongues whenever Desmond walked Aurelia through the halls, had finally boiled over into a collective desire to tear down the outsider who had stolen the school's most untouchable heir. "Hahhahah who’s here alone today? Bianca, can we join too?!" A tall, sharp-featured senior from the lacrosse syndicate laughed, stepping up beside Bianca and looking down at Aurelia with open disgust, as if inspecting a bug trapped under a glass. Bianca’s tense posture relaxed into a triumphant, vindictive smirk as she straightened up, welcoming the reinforcements. She glanced around the circle of hostile faces, reveling in the sheer weight of numbers pressing in from every direction. "Look who finally decided to show up," Bianca purred, folding her arms over her designer blazer. "Right on time, girls. We were just explaining to our little library ghost that fairy tales have a nasty habit of ending when the clock strikes reality. And today, there's no white knight coming to save her." Aurelia pressed back so hard against the mahogany partition of her desk that the sharp wood bit into her spine. The air felt thin, hot, and impossible to draw into her lungs. The sheer wall of hostile faces—dozens of eyes glaring down with undisguised hatred—made the room spin. Her trembling hands scrambled blindly across the desktop, her fingers brushing against her scattered notebooks and pencils, realizing with a sickening drop in her stomach that this time, she was truly, completely cornered.
