A sharp, blinding bolt of agony tore through Aurelia’s scalp as ruthless fingers yanked her upward, ripping her out of the protective alcove and spinning her violently into the center of the open floor. The heavy textbook slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
"Omg she is sooo adorably triggered my absolute annoyance!" a shrill, mocking voice trilled from the wall of closing bodies.
Before she could catch her balance or even draw breath to scream, a heavy sneaker slammed violently into her stomach. The impact knocked the remaining air completely out of her lungs, a choked gasp of pain tearing past her lips as she doubled over, stumbling hard against the cold polished floorboards.
"Ahahhah wait, is an adopted human able to fight?? Hahhah I guess not—!" another girl sneered, looking down at her curled, trembling form with venomous amusement.
The circle of girls closed in tighter, their laughter bouncing off the towering mahogany shelves like a chorus of cruel echoes. Humiliation burned hotter than the physical pain, hot tears stinging the corners of her eyes as she pressed her forehead against the dusty floor, her arms wrapped tightly around her midsection. For a terrifying, suffocating second, the cold concrete steps of the orphanage flashed behind her eyelids—the absolute, crushing reality of being unwanted, unprotected, and utterly alone.
Bianca stood at the edge of the circle, watching the spectacle with a cold, detached satisfaction, her arms crossed over her chest.
"Well?" Bianca murmured, stepping closer and looking down at Aurelia like a specimen under glass. "Where's your fierce protector now, little orphan? Let's see how well he defends you when he's miles away counting his family's money."
With her vision swimming and a sharp, metallic taste of blood on her tongue, Aurelia dug her fingernails into the polished wood of the floorboards. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest, but survival instinct overrode the pain. She began to crawl, dragging her bruised frame desperately toward the distant aisle exit, away from the wall of laughing, sneering faces.
"Oh, look at the stray trying to scurry back to the gutter," a mocking voice rang out above her.
A sharp heel stepped squarely down onto the back of her hand, grinding her knuckles against the hard floor. Aurelia bit down hard on her lower lip, choking back a sob of pure agony as the pressure flared up her arm.
"Let her move," Bianca commanded lazily, a cruel amusement dancing in her eyes as she stepped aside to give her a few inches of clearance. "Let’s see how far she gets before she realizes there’s nowhere left to run."
Trembling violently, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps, Aurelia pulled her hand free and dragged herself another agonizing foot forward, the cold tears finally spilling over her lashes and dripping onto the dusty floor.
“Why…? Why you guys…doing this to me…”
A choked, broken sob slipped past her lips, the raw, trembling question echoing painfully against the towering shelves of the empty library. She didn't have the strength to fight back or pull herself another inch forward; she just collapsed onto her side, her forehead resting against the cool floor as she curled into a tight, defensive ball, her whole body shaking with quiet misery.
"Why?" Bianca echoed, her voice dripping with a poisonous, haughty amusement as she stepped closer, looking down at Aurelia like she was something scraped off the bottom of a shoe. "Because you forgot your place, Aurelia. You think you can just wander in here out of nowhere, latch onto the most powerful heir in this school, and play dress-up like you belong in our world?"
Another girl scoffed, folding her arms tightly over her chest. "You don't belong here. You never did. Without Desmond playing white knight, you're nothing more than the charity case from the shelter everyone pretended not to see."
"And we're just helping you remember that," Bianca added smoothly, a cruel smile curving her lips. "Think of this as a public service. A reality check. So the next time you think you can sit at our table, you'll remember exactly what happens when your protector isn't around to wipe your tears."
“Hic…”
A sharp, ragged hic broke from her throat, swallowed instantly by the bitter taste of despair. The fragile illusion she had built over months—the warm, sunlit safety of Desmond’s library carrels, the easy laughs in the hallway, the desperate belief that love and kindness could permanently insulate her from the cruel arithmetic of birth and blood—shattered completely. The raw truth crashed down with suffocating weight: she was an outsider playing a dangerous game in a world built to crush people like her.
Desmond was bound to an empire of wealth and systemic elitism that would eventually swallow him whole, and she was merely a temporary diversion, an orphan toyed with before being discarded.
Panic, hot and frantic, overrode the searing pain in her stomach and the dull ache in her bruised knuckles. Scrambling to her feet with a sudden, adrenaline-fueled burst of desperation, Aurelia shoved past the wall of mocking faces.
"Catch her!" someone shrieked behind her, but Aurelia didn't look back.
She bolted down the corridor, her sneakers slamming in a frantic, uneven rhythm against the floorboards. She took the stairs three at a time, her lungs burning, her vision blurring with hot, blinding tears. She needed air. She needed an escape from the suffocating snickers, the echoing malice, and the crushing reality of her own powerlessness. Her feet carried her upward, past the classroom wings, past the administrative offices, and straight toward the heavy metal service door leading to the roof.
She threw her weight against the push bar, bursting out into the blinding, open expanse of the Lavalton High rooftop.
The cold spring wind hit her instantly, whipping her tangled hair across her face and catching in her torn blouse. The vast, open sky stretched out above her, offering a fleeting, agonizing second of false freedom.
She stumbled toward the low concrete ledge, pressing her back hard against it, gasping for breath as she clutched her arms around her trembling body. Here, high above the manicured courtyards and the gothic spires, the noise of the school faded into a low, distant hum. For a brief, desperate moment, she thought she had found a sanctuary—a place where the ghosts of the orphanage and the venom of the elite could not reach her.
Then, the heavy metal door at the top of the stairwell clicked open.
Aurelia’s breath hitched in her throat, her blood running instantly cold.
Slowly, deliberately, the rhythmic clack-clack of designer heels spilled out onto the concrete. Bianca stepped out first, her blazer fluttering slightly in the wind, a triumphant, unyielding smirk carved across her face. Flanking her on either side were the others, their eyes locked onto Aurelia like predators cornering a wounded animal in an open field.
"Did you really think you could run away from reality just by climbing a few stairs, little orphan?" Bianca called out, her voice carrying sharply over the wind as she advanced across the rooftop, closing off Aurelia's only escape route. "There is nowhere to hide. You can run to the roof, you can hide in the library, but you’ll always be right back here—trapped at the bottom."
