Chapter 2: The Man She Loves

1092 Words
Rain had always comforted Leah. Tonight, it only made everything feel colder. She sat silently in the passenger seat while the city lights blurred past the car window, her fingers clenched tightly in her lap. The weight pressing against her chest refused to ease. Marriage. The word still sounded unreal. Beside her, Daniel drove with one hand resting loosely on the steering wheel, occasionally glancing at her with concern. He had barely spoken since picking her up. And somehow, that worried her even more. “You’re scaring me, Leah,” he finally said quietly. “What happened?” Her throat tightened. How was she supposed to explain this? How was she supposed to say that her family was falling apart… and another man had offered to buy her future like it was some business transaction? “I…” Her voice cracked slightly. “The company is collapsing.” Daniel frowned immediately. “What?” “My dad hid it from me for a while.” She forced out a weak laugh that sounded nothing like laughter. “Apparently everyone knew except me.” Daniel’s expression darkened. “How bad is it?” Leah stared down at her trembling hands. “They could lose everything.” Silence filled the car. Not disbelief. Fear. Daniel pulled over near the riverside parking lot they used to visit as teenagers. Rain tapped softly against the windshield as the engine quieted. Leah swallowed hard. “There’s more,” she whispered. Daniel turned toward her fully now, concern etched deeply across his face. “Hey… whatever it is, we’ll figure it out together.” Together. The word nearly broke her. Because she wanted to believe it so badly. “A man came to our house tonight,” she said carefully. “Steve Gross.” Daniel blinked. “The CEO?” “You know him?” “Everyone knows him.” Daniel let out a short breath. “He’s ruthless.” That word again. Ruthless. It fit Steve far too well. Leah looked away. “He offered to save my family.” Relief flashed briefly across Daniel’s face—until he noticed her expression. “What’s wrong?” Leah’s lips parted slowly. Then she forced the words out. “He wants to marry me.” The silence afterward felt endless. Daniel stared at her as though he had heard wrong. “What?” “He said he’ll clear the debts and restore the company if I marry him.” Daniel laughed suddenly. Not because it was funny. Because it sounded insane. “That’s ridiculous,” he said instantly. “So say no.” “I did.” “Then what’s the problem?” Leah finally looked at him, and something in her expression made his confidence falter. “Daniel… there may not be another option.” His jaw tightened immediately. “There’s always another option.” “Like what?” she snapped before she could stop herself. Daniel froze. Leah immediately regretted it. But the panic inside her had been building all night. “We don’t have money,” she continued weakly. “The investors pulled out. The banks are pressuring my dad. We could lose our house, Daniel.” “Then we’ll work through it!” “How?” Her voice cracked. “Tell me how.” Daniel opened his mouth. Then closed it again. And that silence hurt more than any answer could have. Leah looked away quickly, blinking back tears. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m just scared.” Daniel’s expression softened instantly. He reached for her hand carefully, holding it tightly. “You think I care about money?” he asked quietly. “Leah, I’d live in a tiny apartment with you for the rest of my life if it meant staying together.” Her chest tightened painfully. Because that was the problem. Part of her believed him. But another part—the terrified part—wondered if love alone could really survive ruin. Daniel brushed his thumb gently over her knuckles. “You’re not actually considering this, are you?” Leah hesitated. That tiny pause destroyed him. He let go of her hand slowly. “No way,” he murmured, shaking his head. “No…” “It’s not like that—” “You’re thinking about marrying him.” “I’m thinking about saving my family!” “And what about us?” Daniel shot back. His voice wasn’t loud. That made it worse. Leah felt tears sting her eyes. “You think this is easy for me?” she whispered. “You think I want this?” “Then don’t do it.” “You saw my father, Daniel!” she cried. “He looked broken.” Daniel ran a frustrated hand through his hair before stepping out of the car suddenly. Leah watched him through blurry eyes as rain soaked his clothes almost instantly. A few seconds later, she hurried out after him. “Daniel—” “How can he even ask that of you?” he said angrily, pacing. “Marriage? Like you’re some kind of deal?” “He’s helping my family.” “He’s buying you.” The words hit hard because deep down… Leah feared he was right. Daniel looked at her then, rain dripping from his dark hair, heartbreak written all over his face. “Tell me you won’t do it.” Leah’s lips trembled. She wanted to say it. She wanted to throw herself into his arms and promise that none of this would change them. But the image of her mother crying… Her father looking defeated… The fear of losing everything… It crushed the words before they could leave her mouth. Daniel’s expression slowly fell apart. And in that moment, he understood. “You’re really going to leave me,” he said softly. “No—” “You are.” “Daniel, please…” He laughed bitterly, looking away. “All those years,” he murmured. “All those promises…” Leah broke then. Tears slid down her cheeks as she grabbed his arm desperately. “I don’t know what to do!” Daniel looked down at her trembling hand gripping him. Then at the tears running down her face. And despite his own heartbreak… He pulled her into his arms. Leah cried against his chest while the rain poured around them. Daniel closed his eyes tightly, holding her like he was terrified to let go. Because maybe… For the first time in his life… He was already losing her.
