Moving Forward

As I sat there across from my pappi,I couldn't help but think of the horrors Ceto could bring with her. Even though she was my sister, she was a stranger to me. I had stayed with my family for a year, before I had decided to try and put the past behind me and leave the only home I had ever known. I let the change from mermaid to human take over on my 19th birthday and moved in with my granparents. Having put down roots in Owls Head Maine for the past 11 years. I had finally bougt my own house a year ago along the Crescent Beach, it wasn't much but my little cottage was all mine and I was proud of it. Taking a deep breath I looked at my pappi" tell me everything you've heard" He proceeded to tell me how Ceto had been spotted just off the coast, not far from my cottage. That she seemed very interested in the shore lines and acted almost as if she was searching for something. I could only guess that she was following up on her threat and that she was on the hunt for me. I wanted to think that she wasn't capable of hurting me,but I had to remind myself that she was a siren, she also felt I was to blame for the death of her mate. Shaking off the feeling of doom that was creeping in, I stood from the table and turned towards the refridgerator to grab the ingredients for a fruit salad I had been planning on making. Giving myself time to think up a plan and to keep my hands busy. Knowing there wasn't much I could do about it, I dished up two helpings of the salad and brought them to the table, sitting down with a big sigh. "There's nothing I can do to change the past, the only thing left for me to do is to prepare for when Ceto shows up." I said before taking a bite of my fruit salad. Pappi nodded his head, he didn't say anything but I could see the concern etched across his face. We finished eating in silence before he stood and walked to my side of the table, placing a kiss on my temple and whispering to be careful and that he loved me, then he let himself out and left. I lost track of how long I sat there in the silence listening to the rain falling and the thunder rumble. Collecting the dishes, I loaded the dishwasher before taking myself off to bed. There was nothing I could do tonight, but tomorrow was a new day and I planned to be prepared for whatever Ceto planned to bring to my doorstep. I felt like I had just closed my eyes when my alarm went off. Letting out a long groan, I swung my hand towards to bedside table knocking my alarm to the floor with a thud. I stayed in bed a few more minutes listening to the birds singing outside my window before pushing back the blankets and shuffling to the bathroom. Glancing in the bathroom mirror as I lett the water warm, I took in my long wavywhite hair as it fell to my waist. I had dark circles under my bright blue eyes that were shadowed my my naturally dark eyebrows. Rubbing my hands against my face I tuned towards the showere stripping my pjaimas off and stepping under the spray of water. There was one thing I knew for sure today, I was going to need caffine if I was going to get through this day. Once I had finished my showere I pulled on my favorite white eyelit sundress with the 3/4 sleeves and my most comfortable brown cowgirl boots. Heading off to the kitchen I started a pot of coffee as I pushed a couple pieces of toast down in the toaster. I added my creamer to my coffee as soon as it had finished brewing and grabbed my toast as it popped tossing it in the air as it burned the tips of my fingers. I made my way back to my room and sat before my vanity mirror with a sign, taking a sip of my coffee as I pour my makeup out of my travel bag. First I applied my eye makeup, applying my usual smokey look and topping it off with my signature black lipstick. I scrunched my hair and gave myself a once over before walking though the kitchen, setting my coffee cup on the counter and grabbing my purse and keys fromthe hall table before heading out the door. Stopping infront of the bakery I pulled my car to the shoulder and jumped out grabbing a paper out of the local box before jogging back to my car and heading towards the nearest park. First thing was first, I had to see if there had been anymore sightings of Ceto recently and if I could tack down the exact locations. I needed to know just how close she was to finding me. I had to find her before she found me and quickly. It would only be a matter of time before Ceto's appetite pick up and when that happened, know one would be safe. Flipping to the second page that had all the local news. The first two stories made me catch my breath. The first read "Mermaids:are the y myths or real. Possible sighting off the shores of Crecent Beach." The send made me close my eyes briefly before opening them to read the story. " Young teen boy, found in shallows off Crecent Beach." Reading thorough the story quickly, all the facts pointed towards Ceto. The boy had been found early the previous day floating in the shallows, authorities believe he had drown but the boys family don't believe it. He was part of the high school swim team and was a strong swimmer. I folded up the newspaper and placed it under my arm pulling my phone from my purse and walking towards my car quickly. I had just reached my car and was fumbling with the keys when they slipped out of my hands. Bending over with a huff and a curse I went to scoop them up when a tan hand beat me to them and brought my keys up and into my out stretched hand. Looking up my eyes met the most vibrant green eyes I had ever seen. It was at that moment that my stomach dropped and I felt the collor drain from my face. "Mate" I whispered before grabbing my keys and jumping in my car and driving away. I couldn't believe I had found my mate. Al I could think was that it was true. Ceto had come back just to avenge her mate by taking mine.
