Chapter 14: The Kings Blood

890 Words
Lyra stared at the woman. “A king?” The word barely left her lips. Elara nodded. “Your father was the last king of the old bloodline.” Lyra shook her head. “No.” She looked at Kael. He still hadn't moved. His face had gone pale. “You know something.” Kael's eyes met hers. “I know my father was the Alpha.” “That isn't what she said.” “I heard her.” “Then tell me she's lying.” Kael opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Lyra's chest tightened. “You knew.” “No.” “You suspected.” “I found some records after my father died.” “And you never told me?” “I didn't know they were about you.” Elara gave a quiet sigh. “You're still trying to protect her from the truth.” Kael turned sharply toward her. “Who are you?” “My name is Elara.” Lyra's breath caught. The name from the photograph. “You're Elara?” The woman nodded. Lyra looked at the photograph again. There was no mistaking her now. She had been there—with Lyra's mother and Kael's father. “What were you doing with them?” Elara's expression softened. “We were trying to save you.” “From what?” “The people who wanted your father's bloodline destroyed.” Lyra frowned. “My father was a king.” “Yes.” “Then why was he hiding?” “Because the kingdom had already fallen.” Lyra stared at her. “There was a kingdom?” “Before the packs divided.” Kael stepped forward. “My father never told me any of this.” “Your father wanted you to live without it.” “Why?” “Because the moment people learned who you were, you would have become a target.” Kael's jaw tightened. “Who would target me?” Elara looked at Lyra. “Anyone who fears what your blood can awaken.” Lyra glanced at the glowing mark on her wrist. “The Moonborn.” Elara nodded. “The Moonborn and the King's blood were never meant to be separated.” Lyra's heart began to race. “What does that mean?” “It means your mother wasn't the only one hiding something from you.” Lyra looked at Kael. He was already watching her. Neither of them spoke. Then the floor shook. The silver light beneath the cracks brightened. Elara's expression changed. “We have to go.” Kael frowned. “Why?” “Because it's waking up.” “What is?” Elara looked toward the floor. “The thing your ancestors buried.” A deep sound rolled beneath them. Not a heartbeat this time. A growl. Lyra's wolf answered instinctively. She grabbed her chest. “No.” Kael moved toward her. “Lyra?” “My wolf…” She bent forward. “It hurts.” Kael caught her shoulders. “Look at me.” She tried. Her vision blurred. The room disappeared. Suddenly, she was standing in a vast stone hall. Torches burned along the walls. People knelt on both sides of a long red carpet. At the end stood a man wearing a silver crown. Lyra couldn't see his face clearly. But something inside her recognized him. Her wolf whispered, Father. Lyra's breath caught. The man turned. His eyes were the same shade of gold as Kael's. Then everything changed. Blood covered the floor. Someone screamed. Her mother was running toward her. “Lyra!” Lyra reached for her. But another figure stepped between them. A man in a black cloak. He raised a blade. Lyra screamed. The vision vanished. She collapsed. Kael caught her before she hit the floor. “Lyra!” She opened her eyes. For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Kael knelt beside her. “What did you see?” Lyra looked at him. “I saw him.” “Who?” “My father.” Kael went still. “He was wearing a crown.” Lyra swallowed. “I saw his face.” Her voice broke. “He looked at me.” Kael didn't know what to say. For the first time, Lyra realized she had just seen the face of the man she'd spent her whole life wondering about. She didn't know whether to cry or feel angry. Maybe both. Elara closed her eyes. “It has begun.” Kael looked at her. “What has?” “The memories.” Lyra wiped at her cheeks. “What does that mean?” Elara looked at her with something close to pity. “You're beginning to remember the life that was taken from you.” Lyra stared at her. “How?” “Because your bloodline has awakened.” A loud c***k split the room. The floor opened wider. Stone collapsed into the darkness below. Kael pulled Lyra back. Something moved beneath them. Two golden eyes slowly opened in the darkness. Maya screamed. Kael stepped in front of Lyra. “What is that?” Elara's face went pale. “The guardian.” The creature beneath them growled. Its eyes fixed on Lyra. Then it spoke. “King's blood.” Lyra froze. The creature lowered its head. “Come home.”
