The morning after the Full Moon Gathering was unlike any Luna Carter had ever experienced.
For years, she had walked through the Moon Shadow Pack unnoticed, except when someone wanted to mock her. Now, every pair of eyes followed her wherever she went.
Some stared in disbelief.
Others whispered behind her back.
"How could Alpha Kael choose her?"
"There must be something special about her."
"Or perhaps the Alpha King made a terrible mistake."
Luna lowered her head and continued walking, pretending not to hear them. Their words still stung, but after years of ridicule, she had learned how to hide her pain.
She reached the Alpha's mansion before sunrise and quietly began her chores. As she swept the entrance hall, Mrs. Helen watched her with folded arms.
"I never imagined I'd live to see the day an Alpha King would call a servant his mate," the older woman said.
Luna stopped sweeping.
"I'm still the same person."
Mrs. Helen sighed.
"Perhaps. But whether you like it or not, your life changed last night."
Before Luna could answer, a familiar voice called her name.
"Luna!"
She turned to see Mira hurrying toward her with a basket of freshly picked herbs.
"I've been looking everywhere for you," Mira said, smiling. "Come with me. Father needs help preparing medicine."
Grateful for the excuse to leave, Luna followed her to the healer's cottage.
The sweet scent of herbs filled the small room as the old healer crushed leaves with a stone mortar.
"Good morning, Luna," he greeted kindly.
"Good morning."
For the next hour, the girls sorted herbs while Mira talked excitedly about the previous night's events.
"I still can't believe Alpha Kael called you his mate."
Luna smiled weakly.
"I still can't believe it either."
"You'll see him again, won't you?"
"I don't know."
Before Mira could continue, someone knocked gently on the wooden door.
Elder Rowan entered with his usual calm expression.
"Luna," he said softly, "would you walk with me?"
She looked at him curiously.
"Of course."
The two left the village and followed a narrow forest path. The farther they walked, the quieter the world became until only birdsong and the rustling leaves could be heard.
After several minutes, they arrived at a hidden clearing.
In its center stood an ancient stone altar covered in vines and glowing faintly beneath the morning sunlight.
Luna stared in amazement.
"I've lived here my whole life... but I've never seen this place."
"Very few have," Rowan replied. "This is the Moon Altar. It has stood here for centuries."
He gently brushed his hand across the weathered stone.
"Your parents came here often."
Luna's heart skipped a beat.
"My parents?"
She had no memories of them. No photographs. No stories.
Only silence.
"You knew them?" she asked quietly.
Rowan nodded.
"They were among the kindest people our pack has ever known."
"Then why has no one ever told me about them?"
The old elder looked toward the sky before answering.
"Because after they died... many believed the truth should remain buried."
Luna felt her chest tighten.
"What truth?"
Before Rowan could answer, a deafening wolf howl echoed through the forest.
Another howl answered it.
Then another.
The peaceful morning shattered instantly.
Warriors' voices rang out from the village.
"Rogues!"
"They've crossed the eastern border!"
Rowan's expression darkened.
"They've come sooner than I feared."
Luna's heartbeat quickened.
"What do they want?"
The elder looked directly into her eyes.
"I'm afraid..."
Luna's heart raced as the howl echoed through the forest again, this time so close that birds scattered from the trees.
"Elder Rowan..." she whispered. "What do we do?"
The old elder gripped his wooden staff and looked toward the village.
"We leave. Now."
They hurried back through the forest, but before they had gone far, three warriors came running toward them.
"Elder!" one of them shouted. "The rogues have broken through the eastern border. The Alpha has ordered everyone to return to the village."
Rowan nodded.
"Take Luna and keep her close."
The warriors immediately formed a protective circle around her as they rushed toward the pack.
The peaceful village had turned into chaos. Mothers hurried their children indoors while warriors raced toward the gates with swords and spears in hand. The sound of wolves growling echoed through the air.
Luna searched the crowd anxiously.
"Mira!"
"I'm here!" Mira called, running toward her. She threw her arms around Luna in relief. "I was so worried."
Before Luna could answer, a fierce growl came from the entrance.
Several rogue wolves burst through the gates, attacking the guards without mercy.
The battle began.
Warriors shifted into their wolves, crashing into the rogues with powerful snarls. Dust rose into the air as claws and teeth clashed.
Luna instinctively pulled two frightened children behind a wagon.
"Stay down," she whispered. "Don't come out."
One rogue noticed them.
Its glowing red eyes locked onto Luna.
"There she is!" it growled.
Instead of attacking the nearest warrior, it charged straight toward her.
Luna froze.
Why was it coming for her?
Just as the rogue leaped, a massive black wolf flew through the air and slammed into it, sending both wolves rolling across the ground.
The black wolf rose with a thunderous growl.
Alpha Kael.
He shifted back into his human form, his silver eyes blazing with anger.
"Get away from my mate."
The rogue laughed as it struggled to its feet.
"So... the rumors are true."
Kael stepped in front of Luna.
"Who sent you?"
The rogue smiled coldly.
"Our King has waited many years for the girl."
Luna frowned.
"The girl?"
"You belong to him."
Before anyone could question him further, the rogue bit down on a small capsule hidden beneath his tongue. Within seconds, he collapsed to the ground.
"He poisoned himself," Damon said, kneeling beside the body.
Kael's jaw tightened.
"He chose death rather than reveal the truth."
A heavy silence settled over the battlefield.
The remaining rogues had already fled into the forest.
Kael turned to Luna.
"Are you hurt?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No... but I don't understand any of this."
Neither did Kael.
Why would rogues risk their lives to capture a young woman who had never even shifted?
Elder Rowan stepped forward, his face unusually pale.
"They weren't searching for just anyone," he said quietly.
"They were searching for Luna."
Everyone looked at him.
The old elder closed his eyes for a moment before speaking again.
"I've kept this secret for twenty-one years."
He opened his eyes and met Luna's confused gaze.
"It's time you learned the truth about who your parents really were."
Luna's breath caught in her throat.
At last...
The answers she had searched for all her life were finally about to be revealed.
End of Chapter Three.ore he could finish, another terrifying howl echoed through the trees—this one much closer than before.
